Moravian And Juniata Set For ECAC Postseason

MADISON, N.J. - The Moravian College women, and Juniata College men's basketball teams will begin their quest for a postseason championship on Wednesday as each team competes in the ECAC Division III South Region Basketball Championships.

Both teams claimed ECAC Championship bids after strong regular seasons, and will play quarterfinal games Wednesday evening. The semifinals and finals will take place on Saturday and Sunday at sites and times to be determined after the quarterfinal rounds.

Moravian (16-10) earned the number-five seed in the women's championship and travels to play fourth-seed Washington & Jefferson College (20-7) Wednesday night at 7 p.m. With a victory over Washington & Jefferson, the Greyhounds would face the winner of the quarterfinal between top seed Gwynedd-Mercy College and Lake Erie College in the semifinals. Moravian dropped a tight two-point game on a late basket in the Landmark semifinals after posting a 16-9 record in the regular season. The Greyhounds were the highest scoring team in the conference during the regular season, averaging nearly 70 points per game. The team was also the only conference team to defeat Landmark Champion, and NCAA Tournament participant The University of Scranton. Led by All-Conference performers Kate Harrison and Alyssa Bisci, the Greyhounds have four players averaring nearly 10 or more points per game.

Juniata (17-10) is back in the ECAC field for the second straight season after earning the team's first postseason berth last year. The Eagles are the sixth seed and will face third seed Misericordia University (18-9) at 7 p.m. Wednesday evening. With a victory, the Eagles would be paired up in the semifinals with the winner of the game between second seed Carnegie Mellon University and seventh-seed Grove City College. Juniata reached the championship game of the Landmark postseason before falling in a tight game to Scranton. Seniors Brian Cannon and Kyle Opitz were both All-Conference picks as Cannon ranked among the Landmark leaders in scoring and rebounding while Opitz was one of the top long-range shooters in the conference. The Eagles ranked second in the conference in both field goal percentage and defensive field goal percentage.

In its first season of competition the Landmark Conference earned a total of six postseason berths in basketball. Two men's and two women's teams earned NCAA Tournament berths to go along with the two ECAC selections.
