Drew Lacrosse Teams Earn ECAC Bids

MADISON, N.J. – The Drew University men’s and
women’s lacrosse teams have each earned bids to the ECAC
Metro/South Region Championships. The six-team women’s
championship will begin Wednesday May 6, while the four-team
men’s championship will start Friday May 9.
The Drew women earned the fourth seed for the championship and will
host fifth seed Gwynedd-Mercy in a quarterfinal match in Madison,
N.J. at 6 p.m. The winner will move on to take on top seed
Dickinson in the semifinals on Saturday, with the finals the
following day. The semifinals and finals will both be held at
Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, N.J.
The Ranger men earned the second seed in the four-team
championship, and will host third seed SUNY-Maritime in the
semifinal 7 p.m. Friday night. With a win, Drew would face the
winner of the semifinal between top seed Swarthmore College and
fourth-seed Manhattanville College on Sunday May 11 at the site of
the highest remaining seed.
The Ranger women finished the season with a record of 9-7 and were
the third seed for the Landmark women’s lacrosse postseason
where the team was upended by Goucher in the opening round. Drew
won four of its final six games down the stretch, including a win
over the second-seed in the ECAC championship Stevens Tech. Led by
freshman Stacie Brown, who was selected as the Landmark Player of
the Year, Drew placed six players on the Landmark All-Conference
Team. Drew outscored its foes 186-185 overall on the year, and
totaled 64 goals in five Landmark matches.
Drew men’s lacrosse team will try to continue its momentum
after the Rangers claimed the first Landmark men’s lacrosse
championship. The team finished the season 9-7 and earned the top
seed for the conference postseason where it earned tight victories
over USMMA and Goucher to earn the title. After opening the season
0-4, the Rangers rebounded to drop just three games since March 20,
one of which came in overtime. Head Coach Tom Leanos and his staff
were named the Landmark Men’s Lacrosse Coaching Staff of the
Year, while junior Michael DeGiovanni was the Landmark Player of
the Year. He was also one of four Rangers named first-team
All-Conference.
In the first year of Landmark competition eight conference teams
have earned NCAA Tournament bids, while eight teams have
participated in ECAC postseason championships.
