Nine Competitors Picked As Landmark Players of the Week
MADISON, N.J. - With the fall sports season continuing to motor along a total of nine Landmark student-athletes have been tabbed as Landmark Conference Players of the Week for their performances. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Men's Cross Country:
In a meet featuring five Landmark Conference teams Goucher's Joey
Negreann turned in a strong performance at the Goucher Cross
Country Classic. The junior was the first runner across the line on
the 8K course, posting a time of 17:09.20, more than 51 seconds
faster than his time from the same meet the previous year, and
slightly more than four seconds ahead of the runner-up.
Women's Cross Country:
Kelsey Myette was the first runner across the line at the Goucher
Cross Country Classic this past weekend. The junior finished more
than 45 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher and established
a new course record with a time of 23:59.4. The time is faster than
the winning time from the 2007 Landmark Championship which was held
on the same course.
Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:
Juniata’s Kim Amrod was a big offensive factor as the Eagles
picked up two conference wins. She had a hand in both goals,
assisting on the first and then scoring the game-winner as the team
topped Susquehanna 2-1. She then capped the week by assisting on
the first goal and scoring a late insurance tally in a 4-2 win over
13th-ranked Catholic.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Julia Amendola played two strong all-around matches in a 1-1 week
for Susquehanna. She assisted on the only goal of the match and
helped limit Goucher to seven total shots as the team picked up a
1-0 victory. In a 2-1 loss to Juniata she was part of a defense
that limited Juniata to five second-half shots as the team’s
comeback attempt came up short.
Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Matt Greenberg found the back of the net in both games for Drew
this week as the team went 1-0-1 in two contests. He scored the
only goal of the match as the Rangers remained unbeaten in Landmark
play with a 1-0 win over Scranton. Earlier in the week he had one
of three Drew goals as the team earned a 3-3 draw with
non-conference opponent Ramapo.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Sophomore goalie Ezra Cassel helped Juniata earn a valuable point
with a strong game in goal against Catholic. He allowed one goal in
110 minutes while stopping 17 shots, the highest single-match save
total by a Landmark keeper this season. The 17 saves were 10 more
than his previous single-match high this year and helped Juniata
earn a 1-1 tie with Catholic.
Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Samantha Russo was a significant offensive contributor as Scranton
posted a 2-0 week. She scored an insurance goal late in the contest
to help the Royals remain unbeaten in conference play in a 2-0 win
over Drew. Earlier in the week she assisted on the first score of
the match and then helped Scranton add to its lead with a score
late in the first half in a 3-0 non-conference win over Delaware
Valley.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Catholic goalkeeper Christina Cassidy was perfect in two wins for
the Cardinals this past week. She helped Catholic improve to 2-0 in
conference with three saves while facing 10 shots in a 2-0 shutout
win over Juniata. Earlier in the week she stopped a pair of shots
as Catholic blanked Hood 1-0. The matches were her second and third
shutouts of the season.
Volleyball:
Sophomore outside hitter Claudia Jean had five excellent all-around
performances as Catholic posted a 3-2 record this past week. She
was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Worthington Classic as
the Cardinals went 3-1. She reached double figures in kills in all
five matches, with a high of 16 in a five-set win over Emory &
Henry. She had 15 kills in two other contests, and averaged 3.83
kills per set for the week. She also was in double figures in digs
four times, with a high of 27 against North Carolina Wesleyan. She
averaged 4.14 points and 4.83 digs per set over the five matches
while adding five aces and a block.
