Landmark Chooses Players of the Week
MADISON, N.J. - A weekend of Landmark Championship competition has earned nine student-athletes Landmark Player of the Week recognition. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:
Catholic's Colleen Harwood led the team in scoring during
a perfect 3-0 week that included the team's first Landmark
Championship. The freshman had a goal and an assist as Catholic
claimed the Landmark Championship in a win over Drew, and also
picked up the assist on the goal that opened the scoring in the
team's 2-1 semifinal victory over Juniata. She also produced two
goals, including the match winner in the team's win over Drew in
its regular season finale. For the week she scored three times, and
passed out two assists for a team-best eight points.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Maura Campbell was a key defensive performer as Catholic went 3-0
on the week and claimed its first Landmark Championship. She helped
the Cardinal defense limit their semifinal and final opponents to a
total of 16 shots over two matches, conceding just a pair of goals,
one of which came on a penalty stroke. She also chipped in
offensively with five shots in the Championship game. She also
helped the defense record a shutout with only two shots allowed in
the team's regular-season finale.
Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Cody Kessler was a key offensive performer for USMMA as
the Mariners captured their first Landmark Championship. The junior
struck for the only goal of the match, finding the back of the net
in the 58th minute, to give USMMA a 1-0 win over
Catholic in the Landmark Championship match. Earlier in the week he
scored the Mariners’ second goal in a 3-0 upset of Drew in
the semifinals.
Defensive Player of the Week:
USMMA's Gary Poulin did not allow a goal in 180 minutes of
postseason action for the Mariners in the Landmark postseason. In
the Championship match he recorded eight saves while facing 26
Catholic shots to record the shutout. In the semifinals he made
four saves in net in earning another clean sheet. The shutouts were
the third and fourth shutouts of the year for him, and he helped
USMMA become just the second Landmark team to not surrender a goal
en route to a Landmark Men's Soccer Championship.
Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Rebecca Hextall found the back of the net in both
postseason matches for Scranton as the Royals claimed a third
Landmark Women's Soccer Championship. The sophomore scored the
match winner in the final against Catholic, opening the scoring in
the fourth minute to propel the Royals to a 2-0 win. She also had
the team's second goal in a 3-0 semifinal victory.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Jessica Sciscione anchored a Scranton defense that did not concede
a goal en route to a Landmark Championship. The junior helped hold
Catholic to five total shots, only two on goal, in recording a 2-0
shutout win in the Championship match. In the semifinals she was a
key part of a defense that surrendered just three shots, none of
which were on goal as Scranton claimed a 3-0 win.
Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the
Week:
Despite a loss, Catholic's Caleb Capozella was a part of four
victories for Catholic in its meet against Landmark foe
Susquehanna. He touched the wall first in the 100 back, improving
on his Landmark-best time by swimming 54.81. He also won the 200
back in a time of 2:08.61 and the 400 IM by swimming 4:28.59. He
was also a part of Catholic's winning 200 medley relay
team.
Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the
Week:
Devin Lessard was a part of four victories as Susquehanna remained
unbeaten with a 164-98 dual-meet win over Landmark opponent
Catholic. She set a new school record in winning the 1,000 with a
time of 10:50.53 and also added wins in the 200 fly (2:14.39) and
400 IM (4:50.80). She also swam on the winning 200 medley relay
which posted a time of 1:58.73.
Volleyball:
Amanda Schmidt was a key performer offensively and defensively as
Juniata claimed two postseason wins for its fifth Landmark
Championship. Schmidt pounded out 12 kills with a .385 hitting
percentage in Juniata's Championship match win over Susquehanna. In
the semifinals against Moravian she produced 14 kills with no
errors on 23 swings. Over the two matches she averaged 3.71 kills
per set with a .490 hitting percentage. She also added four total
blocks and totaled 28.5 points for the two wins.
