Landmark Honors Players of the Week
MADISON, N.J. - A week that featured Landmark Championships and the conclusion of the regular season has earned 14 student-athletes Landmark Players of the Week honors. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Baseball:
Player:
Dave Zubia helped Moravian secure the top seed and hosting
rights for the Landmark postseason with a strong week at the plate.
The senior reached base 10 times over three games, knocking out
five hits and walking five times. He was 5-for-6 with a home run
and three runs scored, while driving in two runs and stealing two
bases. He produced a batting average/on-base percentage/slugging
percentage line of .833/.909/1.333 over three games.
Pitcher:
Joe Sforza of Juniata turned in one of his best pitching
performances of the season as the Eagles won their regular-season
finale series with Susquehanna. He tossed a complete game over
seven innings, allowing no earned runs and just two hits while
striking out six. He did not walk a batter, and didn't allow a hit
until the final inning.
Men's Lacrosse:
Offensive:
Drew senior Sean McGowan did a bit of everything as the
Rangers closed the regular season with a win over Washington &
Jefferson. He scored a team-high four goals while also adding an
assist for five points in the victory. He also performed well in
face-offs winning 16-22 in the match, while also collecting 14
ground balls.
Defensive:
In the first start of his career Chris Sumpter turned in a strong
performance in goal as Scranton clinched a postseason berth with a
win over Catholic. He stopped seven shots while surrendering only
seven goals in the victory for the Royals, and also picked up four
ground balls and notched two caused turnovers in the win. He
produced a save percentage of 50-percent in the match.
Women's Lacrosse:
Offense:
Emma Ehler led the Susquehanna offense in a pair of wins last week,
including a Landmark win over Drew that earned the Crusaders the
number-two seed for the conference postseason. The sophomore scored
five goals on 14 shots in the win over Drew, while also picking up
two ground balls. Earlier in the week she had three goals and an
assist in a non-conference win over McDaniel. She had nine points,
four ground balls, four draw controls and a caused turnover over
two matches.
Defense:
Catholic midfielder Mary Swarthout produced a pair of stellar
all-around games in two wins last week. In the Landmark finale
against Scranton she helped the defense limit the Royals to five
goals as she had three ground balls, three caused turnovers and
five draw controls. She also was a factor offensively with four
goals, including the match winner. Earlier in the week she had six
draw controls, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers as
Catholic limited Rowan to seven goals in an 18-7 win. She added two
goals and two assists in that victory.
Softball:
Player:
Kathryn Gilbert led the Susquehanna offense in a 4-0 week
that included a sweep of Landmark foe Scranton to earn the
Crusaders the top seed for the upcoming Landmark postseason. She
hit .583 with a .750 slugging percentage over four games, knocking
out seven hits, including a key triple in the final game against
the Royals. She scored four runs and drove in three for the week,
while adding a stolen base.
Pitcher:
Jenna Carmon won both games of a Landmark doubleheader as
Moravian secured the number-two seed for the upcoming postseason.
She allowed just one hit in a complete-game shutout in game one of
the twinbill against Landmark foe Catholic, and then surrendered
just two runs in seven innings of the second contest. She struck
out eight over 12 innings and produced a 1.17 ERA.
Men's Tennis:
Drew senior Matt Brisotti played a key role in the Rangers claiming
a fifth Landmark Championship, and the fourth of Brisotti's career.
In the final against Scranton he teamed with Matt Imbo to pull out
a tough 9-8 win in second doubles to help Drew build a lead. He
then collected a 6-2, 6-1 victory at second singles to help seal
the victory. He also earned a doubles win in the semifinals by an
8-5 score at second doubles, and his singles match was left
unfinished.
Women's Tennis:
Freshman Megan Azzalina was a perfect 4-0 in singles and
doubles action as Scranton claimed its first Landmark Championship.
In the final against Susquehanna she and teammate Nicole Mahaffey
rallied to a 9-7 win at third doubles, and then she claimed a 6-0,
6-3 win at fifth singles to help the Royals to a 5-0 win. In the
semifinal win over Drew, she claimed an 8-3 win at third doubles
and produced a three-set 5-7, 6-0, 6-2 win at fifth singles.
Men's Outdoor Track & Field:
Field:
Ken Schetroma added to his strong junior track & field season
by earning Male Field Athlete of the Year honors for Susquehanna at
the Landmark Outdoor Track & Field Championships. The junior
placed first in the shot put with a best throw of 14.73-meters and
then added a win in the hammer throw with a toss of 46.76-meters.
He also contributed a fourth-place finish in the discus with a mark
of 38.81-meters, helping Susquehanna place second in the team
standings.
Track:
Juniata's Ceth Parker won a pair of events and was voted the Male
Track Athlete of the Year at the Landmark Outdoor Track & Field
Championships. The senior set a new meet record with a winning time
of 14:56.19 in the 5,000-meter run. That came one day after he won
the 1,500-meter run on the first day of competition, posting a time
of 3:57.24 to place first.
Women's Outdoor Track & Field:
Field:
Kelly Carioto produced several strong performances at the Landmark
Outdoor Track & Field Championships for Catholic. The senior
won a pair of throwing events to earn Female Field Athlete of the
Year honors at the event. She placed first in the shot put with a
toss of 11.88-meters and then added a win in the discus by throwing
37.96-meters. The title was Carioto's second in the shot put at the
outdoor meet, and her first in the discus.
Track:
Catholic's Camelia Mayfield was voted the Female Track Athlete of
the Year for her efforts at the Landmark Outdoor Track & Field
Championships. She opened up the track events by setting a new meet
record of 38:32.72 to win the 10,000-meters. She followed it up the
next day by winning the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of
11:31.15, giving her two wins for the meet.
