Landmark Honors Players of the Week After Conclusion of Championships

MADISON, N.J. - After the conclusion of Landmark Championships in six spring sports a total of 10 student-athletes have been honored as Landmark Players of the Week. The Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark office.

Baseball Player:
USMMA senior Davey May helped USMMA reach the Landmark Championship game with a remarkable week of offensive producetion. The senior hit a home run in five straight at-bats during the week, and finished with a .519 batting average over six games. He pounded out 14 hits, including a total of six home runs, to go along with nine runs scored and 16 RBI. He hit .435 in USMMA’s five Landmark tournament games, helping the team battle out of the loser’s bracket to reach the finals. Two of his six homers came in the tournament.

Baseball Pitcher:
Catholic starter Andrew Moldawer picked up the win in the clinching game as Catholic claimed its second-straight Landmark Baseball Championship. Pitching in the final game of the tourney, he got the start and tossed five scoreless innings, scattering five hits and striking out two. He helped Catholic build a 5-0 lead and slowed down a USMMA offense that was averaging 8.75 runs prior to the final game.

Men's Lacrosse Offense:
Brian Flannery played a critical offensive role as the USMMA men’s lacrosse team earned its first Landmark Championship. He scored twice, and added an assist as the Mariners defeated Scranton in the title match. His second goal of the final came with 3:06 left to seal the victory. Flannery also scored twice and produced an assist in USMMA’s 6-3 semifinal win over Drew. He averaged three points per game during the postseason.

Men's Lacrosse Defense:
USMMA goalkeeper Keegan Boyle was a rock in net for the Mariners as the team won the 2009 Landmark Men’s Lacrosse Championship. His play in goal helped the Mariners concede just nine goals in the two matches as he piled up 24 saves while facing 52 shots. He stopped 14 shots and allowed just three goals in the team’s semifinal win over Drew, and then made another 10 saves in the Landmark Championship match. Boyle boasted a 4.50 goals against average and a .727 save percentage over the two games while also contributing fiive ground balls.

Women's Lacrosse Offense:
Catholic midfielder Kate Robinson provided goal scoring and playmaking as Catholic battled its way to its second-consecutive Landmark Women’s Lacrosse Championship. Robinson scored three goals on six shots, including two tallies late in the game to help Catholic hold off Drew and earn an 11-10 win in the championship match. In the semifinals Robinson erupted for nine points as she scored six times and dished out three assists. For the week she averaged six points per game in helping the Cardinals claim the title.

Women's Lacrosse Defense:
Goalkeeper Melissa Brashear played two strong games in net to help Catholic earn its second Landmark Women’s Lacrosse Championship in as many seasons. In the Championship match against Drew, she stopped nine shots, while facing a total of 27 shots, including some key saves late in the contest to help Catholic hang on for the win. This came after she made six saves in the semifinal victory over Scranton. For the week she posted a 7.29 goals against averaged with a .517 save percentage.

Softball Player:
Sheri Bieniek was an offensive force for Moravian in helping the team capture its second-straight Landmark Conference Softball Championship. The senior hit .545 over the three games, including a 4-for-5 performance with three RBI in the team’s 11-inning win over Susquehanna in the winner’s bracket game. She then went 3-for-4 with three more RBI in the championship game. She finished the tournament with six hits and six RBI.

Softball Pitcher:
Moravian pitcher Jenna Carmon earned a victory and a save in two appearances as she helped the Greyhounds capture the 2009 Landmark Softball Championship. She pitched all 11 innings of the team’s victory over Susquehanna, a win that propelled the team to the championship round. She allowed just three runs in 11 innings while striking out five. She started the weekend by picking up the save as she recorded the last three outs of Moravian’s tournament-opening win over Catholic. She had an ERA of 0.58 over 12 innings of work for the tournament.

Men's Tennis:
Sophomore Alex Belfiore was perfect in singles and doubles competition to help Drew claim its second-consecutive Landmark men’s tennis championship. Belfiore teamed with Matt Brisotti for Drew’s only doubles win and earn a critical point in the Landmark Championship match against Moravian. He then fought to a three-set win at second singles to help secure the 6-3 win. Earlier in the week he had wins at both second singles and second doubles as Drew reached the finals with an 8-1 win over Juniata.

Women's Tennis:
Moravian senior MaryKate Kelly helped the Greyhounds claim their second-straight Landmark Women’s Tennis Championship with a perfect week in singles and doubles play. Playing at third singles she earned straight set victories in both the semifinals and the finals, and then teamed with Kerry McKinley to post two victories at third doubles on the week. She closed out her career with 54 singles wins, the fourth-most in Moravian history.
