Scranton Moves To Top Of President's All-Sports Cup Standings

MADISON, N.J. – The University of Scranton Royals have claimed the top spot in the Landmark President’s All-Sports Cup standings after the completion of the winter season. Twelve of the twenty sports in the Landmark Conference have now concluded leaving institutions only the spring season to leave their mark on the standings. After claiming three Landmark Conference Championships Scranton has accumulated a score of 7.65 to edge out previous leader Susquehanna University’s score of 7.38. Moravian College and Juniata College round out the top half with scores of 6.35 and 6.09 respectively.

The Landmark President’s All-Sports Cup is awarded based on a formula that rewards institutions for their finishes in the regular season conference standings as well as results in Landmark postseason competition. The formula also takes into account the number of sports a school sponsors.

Scranton’s surge to the top was a result of all four of their winter sports teams’ exceptional results. Men’s and women’s basketball both claimed regular and postseason Landmark titles. The Royals women’s swimming team also earned a title at the Swimming and Diving Championships, while the men placed second at the event.

Susquehanna remained in the close fight for the top spot with a solid winter season. The Crusaders men’s team finished first at the Indoor Track Championships earning the lone title. Second place finishes were earned in women’s swimming and indoor track, as well as the men’s basketball team who also reached the conference championship game.

Defending President’s Cup champions, Moravian, surged into third place on the strength of a women’s indoor track title and a men’s second place finish. The Greyhounds women’s basketball team contributed with a second place finish and a trip to the conference championship game.

Juniata remained in title contention with a strong all-around performance in the winter. This included third place finishes in both men’s and women’s indoor track and in women’s basketball.

With both the fall and winter seasons now complete, competition for the eight Landmark institutions has started for the spring season. Eight titles are left to be won in men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, as well as baseball and softball.
