Landmark Honors Nine Players of the Week
MADISON, N.J. - After another full week of competition in the fall 2009 season, nine Landmark student-athletes have been chosen as Landmark Players of the Week. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Men's Cross Country:
Juniata senior Matt Bailey enjoyed a strong race for the Eagles at
the Lock Haven Invitational. He placed fifth overall in the
men’s race, running a time of 26:32.85 over the 8K course,
which is the fastest time in the Landmark at that distance so far
this season. The time was also a two-second improvement on his own
personal best for 8K and he helped the Eagles place sixth among
nine teams at the meet.
Women's Cross Country:
Laura Rupprecht ran a strong race for Juniata at the Lock Haven
Invitational this past weekend. The senior placed ninth out of 92
runners in the 6K race, and she ran a season-best time of 23:54.91
which is the second fastest in the Landmark at that distance this
season, and is also the second fastest time of her career for a 6K
course. Rupprecht’s ninth-place effort helped Juniata place
sixth out of the nine-team field.
Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:
Drew forward Elizabeth Law enjoyed a big offensive week for the
Rangers. She produced eight points in one match, scoring three
goals and collecting a pair of assists as Drew set a new Landmark
single-match record with 10 goals in a 10-0 win over Sweet Briar.
She then scored Drew’s final goal as the Rangers rallied from
a three-goal deficit against Bridgewater before falling on penalty
strokes. She had 10 points over three matches for the week.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Scranton’s Deirdre Rocklein played two strong matches in the
cage as the Royals picked up two victories this past week. The
senior stopped a career-high 15 shots as the Royals held off
Rochester for a 2-1 victory. Earlier in the week she notched a pair
of saves to earn a shutout in a 2-0 victory over Marywood. For the
week Rocklein had a 0.50 goals against average and a save
percentage of .944.
Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Juniata sophomore David Grim scored to key goals to help the
Eagles to a perfect 2-0 week. He scored the tying goal with just 25
seconds left in regulation as Juniata went on to beat St. Vincent
in overtime, then later in the week struck with the first goal in a
2-1 win over Penn State-Harrisburg. Grim ranks among the Landmark
leaders in goals in the early season.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Justin Holbrook earned a pair of victories in goal as Goucher
improved to 4-1 in the early season. The senior keeper stopped four
shots as the Gophers blanked Stevenson 1-0. It was his third
shutout in five matches for the team this season. Earlier in the
week he produced six saves and conceded just one goal as Goucher
earned a 4-1 win over McDaniel.
Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Freshman Courtney Orgill was an offensive force for Catholic as
the Cardinals rolled to a pair of wins to claim its own DC Classic
Tournament Title. She scored a pair of goals in both matches of the
tournament. She had an early tying goal and then capped the scoring
as Catholic beat Gwynedd-Mercy 4-1 and then had the winning first
goal and added the final score in a 4-0 win over Rutgers-Camden.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Susquehanna goalkeeper Alyssa Kemmerer had a busy week in net as
the Crusaders went 1-1-1. She started the week with an eight-save
shutout of Penn State-Harrisburg as Susquehanna won 2-0. After
making six saves in a loss to Eastern Mennonite, she stopped a
career-high 14 shots in a 2-2 draw with Mary Washington. For the
week she totaled 28 saves with a 1.86 goals against average.
Volleyball:
Juniata’s Drew Barnhart earns Player of the Week honors for
the second time in as many weeks as she helped the Eagles to a
perfect 5-0 record, including a win over top-ranked and defending
National Champion Emory. Barnhart pounded out 14 kills with a .347
hitting percentage and one ace in the win over Emory. For the week
she totaled 57 kills while adding 14 digs and six service aces.
