Landmark Honors Eight Players of the Week
MADISON, N.J. - The Landmark Conference has selected eight student-athletes as Players of the Week in their respective fall sports after another week of competition. The selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Men's Cross Country:
Susquehanna’s Paul Thistle was one of the top Division III
finishers at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational this past
weekend. He finished sixth among Division III competitors at the
race, and was 30th overall out of 189 runners. He posted a time of
27:19.00 on the 5.2 mile course, helping Susquehanna place ninth of
14 teams, and third among competing Division III teams.
Women's Cross Country:
Freshman Casey Hess turned in a strong performance for Susquehanna
at the Penn State Spiked Shoe Invitational this past weekend. She
ran a time of 24:10.00 to earn a 58th-place finish among the 187
runners at the meet, and she was the ninth Division III runner to
cross the line. She helped Susquehanna finish third among Division
III teams, and ninth among all 14 teams.
Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:
Catholic’s Tory Gagliardi provided offense off the bench for
the Cardinals as the team posted a 1-1 record this past week.
Gagliardi came off the bench and scored the second and fourth goals
in a 4-0 victory for Catholic over Randolph-Macon after the
Cardinals suffered their first set-back of the season earlier in
the week. She scored the two goals on just two shots.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Scranton goalie Kristina Goetz played two strong games in the cage
for the Royals this past week. In a 2-1 overtime win over Albright,
she made a game-high four saves to help Scranton earn the victory.
Earlier in the week she stopped a season-high nine shots over 81
minutes in an overtime set-back to 16th-ranked Montclair State.
Overall she played 157 minutes and allowed only two goals, good for
a 0.89 goals against average.
Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Kyle Luetjen helped keep the USMMA offense in high gear as he
played a key role in a pair of Mariner wins. In a victory over
rival Coast Guard, he recorded a hat-trick and added an assist in a
6-2 USMMA victory that handed Coast Guard its first loss of the
season. Earlier in the week he scored the team’s second goal
in a 6-0 victory over Mount Saint Vincent. He finished the week
with four goals and an assist, good for nine points.
Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:
Scranton’s Erin Unterstein was a key offensive contributor
for the Royals as the team won a pair of matches to even its record
at 3-3. She provided the game-winning goal in the 94th minute as
Scranton rallied to defeat Lebanon Valley 2-1 to close the week.
Earlier in the week she scored twice, her first two goals of the
season, as Scranton blanked Wilkes 3-0. The two goals came within a
four-minute span in the second half to help put the game out of
reach.
Defensive Player of the Week:
Juniata sophomore goalie Lauren Auster-Gussman was stellar in net
as Juniata won its only contest of the week to improve to 4-0. She
posted a shutout as the Eagles blanked Gettysburg 2-0, making seven
saves to earn the clean sheet. The shutout extended her scoreless
minutes streak to 225 and helped Juniata earn its first-ever win
against a regionally-ranked opponent.
Volleyball:
Juniata’s Erin Albert helped the Eagles earn a pair of wins
over nationally-ranked foes and remain unbeaten overall as the team
went 3-0 at the Teri Clemens Invitational. Albert piled up 33 kills
over three matches with a .286 hitting percentage, and also
contibued 10 blocks, eight digs and four aces over the course of
the tournament. She knocked out nine kills as top-ranked Juniata
defeated second-ranked and host Washington (Mo.) and then had 11
kills with a .500 hitting percentage in a win over 13th-ranked
Wisconsin-Whitewater. She averaged three kills per game over the
course of the tournament.
