Scranton Basketball Holding Sportsmanship Event
SCRANTON, Pa. - In conjunction with National Sportsmanship Day,
The University of Scranton will offer free admission and
“Honor the Game” souvenirs to children attending this
Saturday’s men’s and women’s basketball games
against Drew University at the Long Center.
All children under the age of 18 will be admitted free. The
women’s game, between the Lady Royals and the Rangers, will
begin at 2 p.m., followed by the men’s game at 4:00 p.m.
“Sportsmanship Day at the Long Center” will include
games for children during half-time, a short program on the
importance of sportsmanship, and the distribution of
mini-basketball souvenirs.
Chairpersons for the event are Colleen Murphy, moderator of the
Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and head coach of the
Royals’ women’s soccer team, and Amy Arnold of Glen
Gardner, N.J., and Meaghan Grenaldo of Silver Spring, Md., of the
university’s women’s lacrosse team.
All fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item, which will
be donated to help a local food pantry.
The event is being held in conjunction with the Bochicchio Sport
Character Initiative, which honors the memory of the late Joe
Bochicchio, a Scranton coach who has inspired much of the
University’s work to promote sportsmanship.
Sponsored by the Institute for International Sport, National
Sportsmanship Day is the largest sportsmanship initiative in the
world. An estimated 14,000 universities and schools throughout the
United States and abroad will participate in this year’s
events to mark the 20th anniversary of the initiative.
