Landmark Selects Players Of The Week

MADISON, N.J. - After four team champions were crowned in four fall sports the Landmark Conference has recognized nine student-athletes as Players of the Week. The selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.
Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:

Juniata senior forward Kim Wagner was a significant factor offen­sively as the Eagles claimed the Landmark Field Hockey Cham­pionship. Wagner had a hand in all four goals Juniata scored on the week. In the championship she scored to knot the match at one midway through the second half, and then picked up the assist on the game-winning goal with just over a minute left in the 2-1 win. Wagner also assisted on the game-winning score and then added an insurance tally in Juniata's 2-0 semifinal victory.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Juniata junior goalkeeper Abby Funk turned in two strong per­formances as the Eagles claimed the Landmark Championship. She posted a shutout in the semifinal victory over Drew, and then conceded just one goal in the championship victory. She played all 140 minutes in net, making five saves for the week and finished with a 0.64 goals against average and a .833 save percentage.

Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:

Drew sophomore forward Greg Zizek was a major offensive factor as the Rangers captured the first Landmark Conference Men's Soccer Championship. Zizek scored two of Drew's three postseason goals, including the winners in both the semifinals and championship. In the semifinals he bent in a corner kick for an overtime golden goal in a 1-0 Drew victory. Then in the champi­onship match he knocked home a free kick in the first half to give Drew a lead it would not relinquish.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Drew junior defender Dan Bonder anchored the defense that helped the Rangers claim the Landmark Championship. He helped Drew hold two opponents scoreless in the Landmark postseason, which totaled 194 minutes. The Drew defense surrendered just 14 shots overall in the two postseason matches, and did not concede a goal.

Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:

Scranton sophomore forward Beth Stephens made a huge of­fensive impact as she helped Scranton claim the first Landmark Conference Women's Soccer Championship. Stephens turned in her best scoring performance of the season in the biggest match as she netted a hat trick to lead Scranton to a 4-2 win in the Land­mark final. It was the first three-goal match of her career, and gave her 10 goals for the season, the best total for a Scranton player since 2003.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Scranton senior goalie Jackie Colley played all 180 minutes in net as the Royals claimed the first Landmark Women's Soccer championship. Colley turned away six shots in the championship match, including three point-blank shots, and added one save in her team's semifinal victory. She produced a 1.17 goals against average for the season.

Men's Swimming:
Catholic freshman Brian Jones played a big part as the Cardinals earned their first Landmark Conference win with a dual-meet victory over Goucher. Jones claimed two individual first-place finishes on the day, and also swam a leg in a winning relay effort. He claimed a win in the 200 free with a time of 1:51.98 and then was also first to the wall in a time of 51.26 in the 100 free. He also was a part of the winning 400 free relay team.

Women's Swimming:
Senior Lauren Wood enjoyed a strong day as Catholic outlasted Goucher in a Landmark Conference dual meet this past week. Wood earned one first place individual finish and took part in a first-place relay, while also contributing one runner up finish. She won the 200 free in a time of 2:07.52 and was second in the 100 fly by recording a time of1:05.36. Her performance in the 400 free relay helped the Cardinals win that event in a time of 3:57.52.

Volleyball:
Juniata junior middle hitter Erin Albert helped the second-ranked Eagles capture their 27th-consecutive conference championship as the team claimed the first Landmark Women's Volleyball Champi­onship. Albert knocked out 13 kills to go along with four aces as Juniata swept Scranton in the Landmark Championship. She also had eight kills and a pair of aces earlier in the week in the semi­final win over Moravian. For the week she totaled 21 kills with a .645 hitting percentage and four blocks while also contributing six aces.
