Juniata Names Greg Curley Director Of Athletics

Juniata Names Greg Curley Director Of Athletics

HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Juniata College head men's basketball coach Greg Curley has been named Juniata's athletic director on a permanent basis, after serving as interim athletic director for the past four months.

The appointment was announced Tuesday by Kris Clarkson, Juniata's Dean of Students and chair of the search committee.

"Over the course of our search, it became apparent that Greg had all the salient skills we were looking for in someone to lead Juniata athletics," said Clarkson. "Greg has demonstrated that he knows what it takes to develop a competitive program here at Juniata, and he has the respect of his colleagues in the athletics department as well as among those in the larger Juniata community of alumni, parents, faculty, staff and students. Greg's experience combined with the support of a highly motivated and successful staff will be vital as Greg begins his work leading Juniata athletics in the ever-changing NCAA Division III environment."

"Greg demonstrated his leadership on a daily basis during his term as interim athletics director, and I know he will do an outstanding job guiding our department going forward," added Clarkson.

Curley will continue in his role as head coach of Juniata's men's basketball program.

"After a national search, we were completely convinced that Greg had the talent and knowledge to become a great athletics director. His job will be to take Juniata's athletics program from very good to great, and Greg appreciates that this can only be done if we have athletic excellence among all 19 of our teams," said Juniata President Thomas R. Kepple, Jr.

Curley recently completed his 10th season as head men's basketball coach at Juniata, where he has led the Eagles to a 117-139 record - the most wins of any coach in program history. Among his 10 seasons on the Juniata bench are two of the best in the school history: the 2006-07 campaign, that saw the Eagles win their first conference tournament game, make their first appearance in a conference championship game, and reach the ECAC South Tournament semifinals; and the 2007-08 season, where Juniata again reached the conference title game and earned a second-straight berth in the ECAC South Tournament.

The 2006-07 season ended with Curley earning Commonwealth Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors as Juniata set a program record for wins with a 17-12 record - a feat matched the following season with another 17-12 mark.

"I am excited by the opportunity to lead the Juniata Athletic Department, and am humbled by the thought of following in the footsteps of Larry Bock and Bill Berrier - two men who have meant a great deal to my career, to Juniata, and to Juniata Athletics," said Curley. "I look forward to building upon Juniata's tradition of academic and athletic excellence and to working more closely with our many outstanding student-athletes, coaches, and staff."

Curley previously served as an assistant men's basketball coach and residence director at Juniata from 1996 to 1999. He also had stints as an assistant men's basketball coach at Allegheny College, first in 1995-96 and again from 1999 to 2001.

Curley is a 1995 graduate of Allegheny College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history. A former student-athlete at Allegheny, Curley was a four-year letterwinner on the men's basketball team and served as team captain as a senior. He was a four-time Allegheny College Scholar-Athlete and was a member of Allegheny's 1993 North Coast Athletic Conference men's basketball championship team. He earned his Master's of Education in higher education with an emphasis in sports administration from Penn State in 1997.

A native of State College, Pa., comes from a family well-rooted in central Pennsylvania and collegiate athletics. His father, Stephen, is the University Budget Officer at Penn State, and his uncle, Tim, is Penn State's director of intercollegiate athletics. Greg's brother, Kevin, is currently the head men's basketball coach at McDaniel College. His wife, Jen Frazier Curley, hails from Huntingdon and is the daughter of former Juniata men's basketball standout Pat Frazier '63.

WHAT OTHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT GREG CURLEY:

Larry Bock - head women's volleyball coach at the United States Naval Academy, and former Juniata College athletics director and head women's volleyball coach
"I am delighted that Greg will be the Director of Athletics at Juniata. He is a remarkably intuitive professional, understands what it takes to be successful as a coach, has a terrific relationship with the outstanding staff there and has the kind of rapport with with intradepartmental colleagues that will maximize the effectiveness of everyone within Juniata Athletics. I've always been a big Greg Curley fan and join so many others in applauding this selection."

John Reeves - Commissioner, Landmark Conference
"Following numerous professional interactions with Greg while he served in the capacity of head basketball coach and later as interim athletics director, I became convinced that he would fit in very well as an athletics director in general and as a Landmark Conference director in particular."
