Landmark Honors Nine Players Of the Week

Landmark Honors Nine Players Of the Week

MADISON, N.J. - The fall sports seasons are winding down and one winter sport has kicked into action, helping nine student-athletes earn honors as Landmark Players of the Week. The Landmark Player of the Week selections are made by the Landmark Conference office.

Field Hockey
Offensive Player of the Week:
Junior Briana Van Buskirk highlighted a big offensive week for Moravian which saw the team post a 3-0 record. She produced the 12th hat-trick in program history and had a part in all four goals, scoring three times and adding an assist in a win over Division II Mercy. She then added two goals in a lopsided win over Cedar Crest, and helped Moravian outshoot Landmark foe Goucher 27-1 in a 3-0 conference win.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Scranton goalkeeper Alexandria Marandino did all she could to help Scranton try and pull off an upset of Landmark leaders Catholic this past week. The senior keeper kept the 12th-ranked Cardinals off the scoreboard for 65 minutes, matching her season-high with 17 saves, before ultimately surrendering two goals in the final five minutes in the 2-0 setback. She faced 28 shots overall in the contest.

Men's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:

Sam Nepveux scored two goals in two matches, and both of them were critical, as Drew completed a 2-0 week with a pair of conference wins. He scored the only goal of the match as the Rangers blanked rival USMMA 1-0 in a midweek contest. He then struck with the winning goal in overtime, converting in the 95th minute to give Drew a 2-1 win over Juniata and secure its spot in the Landmark postseason.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Goucher freshman Brandon Weiner was a significant offensive and defensive contributor in a 1-1 week for the Gophers. The freshman helped the team’s defense limit Catholic to a pair of goals and nearly pull off the upset of their local rivals, and then record a shutout in a 2-0 win over Landmark foe Moravian to cap the week. He also got into the act offensively, scoring the team’s lone goal against Catholic and scoring the match winner in the Moravian contest.

Women's Soccer:
Offensive Player of the Week:

Paula Pryor provided all the goal scoring for Juniata in an unbeaten week that kept the team's postseason chances alive. In the first match of the week she had the team's lone goal as the team captured its first conference point with a 1-1 draw with rival Susquehanna. She then had the only goal of the match just seconds before the end of the first half as the Eagles topped Drew by a 1-0 score.

Defensive Player of the Week:
Scranton's Jessica Sciscione earns the honor for the third time this season after contributing defensively and offensively for the Royals this week. She anchored a defense that did not concede a goal in a pair of Landmark matches, shutting out Moravian and Catholic in conference victories. The defense surrendered just 13 shots, and only one of them on goal in the two outings. Offensively, she produced the first two goals of her career, connecting on a pair of free kicks for two of Scranton's three goals in a 3-0 win over Moravian.

Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week:
Josh Heller won three events and participated in a winning relay to help Susquehanna open the 2011-12 season with a dual meet victory. Heller captured both the sprints against Goucher, winning the 50 in a time of 21.35 and adding a win in the 100 at 49.24. He also touched first in the 50 backstroke, swimming 26.35 to claim that event. He also anchored Susquehanna's winning 400-free relay which posted a time of 3:26.30.

Women's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week:
Freshman Lexi Cole got her college career off to a strong start with two event wins in Susquehanna's season-opening dual-meet win. She placed first in the 200 free with a mark of 2:05.32 and then was also fastest in the 500 free with a time of 5:31.85. She also swam in the 400 medley relay which placed second and swam a time of 4:24.91.

Volleyball:
Juniata's Amanda Schmidt produced a pair of efficient offensive performances in two wins this week for the Eagles. She knocked out a season-high 14 kills on 24 swings without an error as the Eagles topped Carnegie Mellon 3-1. She also had three blocks and two digs in the match. The previous night she had eight kills with two digs in a win over Division II Indiana (Pa.). She hit .452 with 3.14 kills per set for the week, and averaged 3.43 points per set for the week as well.
