Landmark Announces Players of the Week

TOWSON, Md. – The Landmark Conference has released the Players of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

Baseball Player of the Week
Matt Hanson
Moravian (Jr., OF, Doylestown, Pa.)

Hanson helped the Greyhounds to a 4-0 week as the team improved to 26-6 overall and clinch the top seed in the 2014 Landmark Conference Tournament. Hanson hit .571 with eight hits in 14 at-bats. He scored seven runs and drove in seven more runs, and Hanson had a double and a homer for a .857 slugging percentage. He also drew two walks for a .684 on-base percentage, and Hanson stole two bases. Hanson opened the week with a 1-for-4 performance in Moravian's 8-1 win over then No. 6 Kean University. He was 1-for-2 with two runs in an 8-1 victory at DeSales. Hanson finished the week with a 6-for-8 performance in a doubleheader sweep over Scranton that also included four runs, six RBIs, a double and his team-leading second homer of the year.

   
Baseball Pitcher of the Week
Thomas Mariano
Moravian (Sr., RHP, Hazleton, Pa.)

Mariano tossed the first seven innings of Moravian's win over then No. 6 Kean University with a run on three hits and five walks while striking out four batters to improve to 3-2 on the season. The Cougars would get a run on two hits in the first three hitters of the game before Mariano shut the door. Kean loaded the bases in the top of the fifth inning, trailing 6-1, with no outs but Mariano would get two strikeouts and a ground out to end the threat. The win was Mariano's 12th career win.

Men's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Sam Morgan
Goucher (Jr., A, Wilmot, N.H.)

Morgan scored a career-high four goals in Goucher's win over Catholic last Thursday. He scored three goals in the first five minutes of the third quarter to help the Gophers open up a commanding 11-2 lead. Morgan also added an assist in the win.

   
Men's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Karl Wiszumerski
Goucher (Jr., G, Pottstown, Pa.)

Wiszumerski held Catholic to just two goals in 46 minutes on Thursday for a 2.60 goals against average. He made seven saves in the win to finish with a save percentage of 77.8 to mark his second highest of the season.

Women's Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Week
Krysta Cento
Drew (Jr., M, Garden City, N.Y.)

Cento provided a consistent and potent offensive output in a 2-1 week for the Rangers, who clinched a berth in the Landmark Conference Tournament with a 20-11 win over Goucher College on Saturday. Cento totaled 24 points during the week on nine goals and 15 assists. She added 10 ground balls, 17 draw controls and six caused turnovers.

   
Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week
Jadin James
Drew (Fr., GK, Farmington, Conn.)

James picked up two wins between the pipes during a 2-1 week for the Rangers, which ended with clinching a berth in the Landmark Conference tournament. James appeared in all three games with a 10.62 goals-against average and 25 saves for a 55.6 percentage. Her 16 saves in a 16-7 win over Kean University on Thursday is tied for the ninth most in a single game in school history, and she is now on that list three times after notching 17 and 19-save games this year.

Softball Player of the Week
Erin Adams
Catholic (Fr., 3B, Dunkirk, Md.)

Adams went 5-for-9 from the plate for Catholic who split games with Moravian to remain in third place in the Landmark standings. In the Cardinals' 9-0 win, Adams was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and a 1.000 slugging percentage. The rookie was perfect in the field from third base with three putouts and four assists.

   
Softball Pitcher of the Week
Victoria Capozucca
Catholic (Sr., P, Brooklyn, N.Y., 23)

Capozucca pitched the complete game shutout victory over Moravian on Thursday as the team won 9-0. The senior pitched the entire game scattering six hits with two strikeouts.  Capozucca pitched 3.1 innings of relief in the second game of the doubleheader and gave up two hits with one run for a 0.68 earned run average for the series.

Men's Tennis Player of the Week
Matt Tuorto
Moravian (So., Verona, N.J.)

Tuorto helped Moravian to a 2-0 record last week with a pair of 9-0 wins including a win over USMMA Thursday to clinch the fourth seed in the 2014 Landmark tournament. Tuorto was 2-0 in first doubles with sophomore John Wylie, and he won both of his matches at first singles including rallying for a three-set win vs. USMMA.

Women's Tennis Player of the Week
Amanda Bercovici
Goucher (Jr., Hackensack, N.J.)

Bercovici capped off a perfect Landmark season in both singles and doubles, finishing 6-0 in each as Goucher finished a win short of the playoffs. She tallied wins against Susquehanna and Juniata this week to finish 21-4 in singles and 15-6 in doubles overall this season.

Men's Outdoor Track Player of the Week
Dillon Farrell
Moravian (Jr., North Wales, Pa.)

Farrell took second in the 1,500-meter run at the Greyhound Invitational with an ECAC mark of 3:57.75, the fifth fastest-time in Moravian history. It marks the fastest time in the Landmark this season and the fifth fastest all-time.

   
Men's Outdoor Field Player of the Week
Tom Schetroma
Susquehanna (So., Elysburg, Pa.)

Schetroma placed second in the shot put at Dickinson’s Twilight Invitational on Thursday. He had a career best throw of 14.77 meters to improve his place at the top of the Landmark results this season.

Women's Outdoor Track Player of the Week

Ashley West

Susquehanna (So., East Hampton, N.Y.)

West set a new program record and Landmark Conference record in the 800 meters on Saturday. She finished the race in 2:13.50, easily surpassing her previous personal best of 2:16.57. West placed 29th amongst the field of 78 at Princeton’s Larry Ellis Invitational. Her time currently ranks 11th in NCAA Division III this season.
 

 

Women's Outdoor Field Player of the Week
Jenny Kratch
Moravian (Jr., Long Valley, N.J.)
Kratch had a career best toss of 46.62 meters (152 feet, 11 inches) in the hammer throw to lead the Moravian College women's track & field team on the opening day of the 2014 Greyhound Invitational Friday. Kratch was fifth in the hammer with her ECAC qualifying toss. The distance is also the fourth-best toss in school history. Kratch placed eighth in the shot put with a toss of 11.47 meters (37 feet, 7.75 inches), just 0.13 meters shy of the ECAC qualifying mark. On Saturday, Kratch finished 10th in the discus at 33.21 meters (108 feet, 11 inches).
