Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. — The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to the team throughout the season.

Baseball conference play started over the weekend with Catholic picking up a pair of wins over Moravian. The Cardinals defeated the Greyhounds 7-6 in 10 innings thanks to a walk off single from Thlen-Quoc Tran. Catholic went on to beat Moravian 5-1 in the second game. The opening game of the series was postponed due to the rainy conditions and will be made up at a later date. Catholic is now on a six game winning streak with an overall record of 12-2.

While most of the games were canceled due to the winter storm in the region, Susquehanna earned two wins on their final day of its spring break trip in Florida. The River Hawks defeated Endicott 3-0 and Fitchburg St. 5-1. Susquehanna is now 8-4 on the year.

In men’s lacrosse, Catholic continued its impressive season, defeating Marywood 14-8 over the weekend. The win gave Cardinals head coach Broks Singer his 150th career win. Catholic is off to their best start in program history with an 8-1 record. The rest of the schedule will feature conference games, with the Landmark Men’s Lacrosse tournament set to begin on Wednesday, May 3 with two semifinal games.

Elizabethtown women’s lacrosse improved to 3-1 on the season with a 15-4 victory over Widener.

The tennis teams wrapped up their spring break trips last week and is set to start conference play this weekend.

Simone had a big week to help the Royals go 3-2 in the final five games of their spring break trip to Fort Myers, Fla. He hit .533 with a .611 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage. He finished with eight hits in 15 at bats, including four doubles and a home run.

Men's Pitcher of the Week - Joseph Salzano, Catholic

Closer Joseph Salzano took the Catholic mound in the top of the eighth and pitched all three extra innings of game one. He tossed three strikeouts in three innings and earned his second win of the 2017 season. The senior gave up just one hit and with three total chances he recorded three assists. Salzano gave the Catholic offense the opportunity to capture the extra-innings victory as Moravian left five total runners on base during Salzano's showing.

Stricker Led the Royals to a 4-1 week in their games in Clermont, Florida over Spring Break. The senior won the RPI game on March 15 with a three-run home run with two outs in the fifth inning, lifting Scranton to a 4-2 win. On the week, she hit .529 with seven RBI and a slugging percentage of .882.

Rentzheimer appeared in three games on the week in Florida and won them all, improving her record to 4-2 overall for the year. She posted a dominant performance in the MCLA game on Thursday, retiring the first 13 batters in a row before giving up a hit with one out in the fifth inning. The junior didn't allow an earned run in three starts, tossing a complete game against RPI on Wednesday in a 4-2 win.

Men's Offensive Athlete of the Week - Alec Tzaneteas, Susquehanna

(Jr., M - Mahwah, N.J.)

Susquehanna junior Alec Tzaneteas led the River Hawks in two victories last week with five goals and one assist. In teh 13-6 win at Randolph, Tzaneteas scored once and assisted once. Then in the 8-7 win at Bridgewater (Va.), the junior netted four goals with one groundball.

Junior defender Alex Weightman anchoed a defense that gave up 6.5 goals during the 2-0 week, totaling eight groundballs adn four caused turnovers. In the 13-6 win at Randolph, Weightman had six groundballs and four caused turnovers and recorded two groundballs in the 8-7 win at Bridgewater (Va.).

Women's Offensive Athlete of the Week - Meghan Kerr, Scranton

Kerr was dominant on the offensive end in a pair of matches played over the week in North Carolina, pouring in four goals in matches at Guilford and Meredith. She also added four assists in the Guilford victory and two more in the tough loss to Meredith.

Elizabethtown goalie Abby Koptyko stood tall in goal for the Blue Jays in a 15-4 win over Widener on Saturday. Kopytko made a season-high 8 saves for E-town, including six in the second half and four on free position attempts in the final 30 minutes. Kopytko's play stifled any sort of momentum Widener tried to build while her offense provided her with 15 goals in the win.

Junior Salikh Gilmutdinov had a 4-0 week through singles and doubles play during a 2-0 period for the Rangers. Gilmutdinov outscored the oppositions' top singles players 24-1 in the pair of Drew victories, while teaming with sophomore Will Morrison for two wins at first doubles, 8-3 against Rutgers-Newark and 8-2 over John Jay. Gilmutdinov is now 10-1 this season in singles matches, 8-0 at No. 1 in dual matches.

Freshman Maria Navas Espinal was unblemished in singles and doubles victories in Drew's 8-1 win against John Jay on Friday. She breezed past the Bloodhounds' No. 4 singles player, 8-0, in a pro-set before combining with senior Jessica Cheng for an 8-0 whitewash at the second doubles position. Navas Espinal is 8-2 overall in singles this year with a 6-1 mark in dual matches, including a six-match winning streak.

The Catholic University of America men's track & field team began its outdoor season on Saturday as the Cardinals competed at the Mary Washington Opener. Junior Brian Seward, who did not compete indoor as he also plays men's basketball at Catholic University, got off to a strong start with a bronze performance in the 200-meter dash as he crossed the finish line in 23.58. Seward also took fourth in the 400 at 52.70.

The Catholic University of America men's track & field team began its outdoor season on Saturday as the Cardinals competed at the Mary Washington Opener. Catholic ACT went 1-2 in the pole vault as sophomore Chadd Ziegler was the first to clear 4.11 meters and was followed by freshman Dillon Frawley. The height was a meet record at Mary Washington. Ziegler and Frawley were nearly a meter higher than the third-place finisher.

The Catholic University of America women's track & field team began its outdoor season on Saturday as the Cardinals competed at the Mary Washington Opener.Senior sprinter Danielle Caruccio showed her speed as she took second overall in the 400-meter dash as she crossed the finish line in 1:01.10. Caruccio added a fifth-place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.32.

Freshman Natalie Kent had a strong showing in her outdoor track and field season for Goucher. She placed second in the discus with a mark of 33.26m, which set a new Goucher College school record. Kent also placed third in the shot put with a mark of 10.42m.
