Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. — The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to the team throughout the season.

Moravian softball became the first spring team to wrap up a playoff berth with its doubleheader sweep over Drew on Saturday. The Greyhounds (26-2, 8-0) have qualified for the postseason in each of head coach John Byrne's 24 years leading the program, and needs to win two of its remaining four Landmark Conference contests to secure the top seed and right to host the Landmark Conference Tournament on May 5-6.

Elizabethtown men’s lacrosse also clinched this weekend. The Blue Jays (10-3, 5-0) secured the 8-7 victory against Scranton thanks to a game-winning save by Tom Mahoney. Elizabethtown had possession with less than 40 seconds, but Scranton's defense forced a turnover and got the ball back to send the attack the other way. As precious seconds ticked off, Scranton’s William Joyce fired off one last shot. Mahoney made his eighth and final save to secure the Jays' win and move the team to 5-0 in the conference.

Susquehanna baseball remained at the top of the standings after a sweep over Juniata. The River Hawks improved to 17-12 overall and 9-3 in conference action. On Friday, Elizabethtown (16-9, 5-3) swept Catholic by the scores of 11-2 and 4-3 before dropping the third game of the series 11-2 on Saturday to hold onto third place. The Cardinals (22-8, 10-4) are second while Drew (16-10, 5-4) is fourth in the standings.

In women’s lacrosse, Catholic bounced back from a 12-4 loss at Mary Washington with an 8-7 overtime victory against non-conference foe Franklin & Marshall. The Cardinals (8-4, 3-0) will travel to Goucher this Wednesday for a 5:00 p.m. game. Scranton (9-3, 3-1) handed Elizabethtown (9-3, 3-1) its first conference loss of the season. The Royals defeated the Blue Jays 15-11 to move into a tie for second.

The 2017 Outdoor Championships are two weeks away, and fans can purchase championship t-shirts online here in a presale which runs through Monday, April 24.
