Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

Men’s Basketball
Drew University opened its 2018-19 season with three wins. The Rangers won 76-70 in the season opener against FDU-Florham. Drew hosted its annual Rose City Classic and earned a pair of victories. On Friday, the Rangers won 73-69 against Wheaton (Mass.) and beat Washington & Lee, 88-73 on Saturday. The University of Scranton also earned two more wins to move to 3-0 on the young season. the Royals hosted Hartwick on Saturday, winning 82-67 and beat St. Lawrence on Sunday, 82-68.

Women’s Basketball
Moravian College continued its hot streak, picking up two more wins. The Greyhounds defeated Lynchburg, 69-63 and earned a 61-58 victory over Eastern. Moravian is now 4-0 on the season. The University of Scranton opened its season with a pair of wins. The Royals defeated King’s 70-58 and picked up a 69-47 win against Wilkes.

Swimming & Diving
Catholic University men’s swimming & diving team defeated Goucher College 212-37 while the women’s team earned a 213-49 victory. Elizabethtown College men earned a 138-123 victory against Drew University, while the Ranger women defeated the Blue Jays, 164-96.

Men's Athlete of the Week - Riley Collins, Drew

Men's Athlete of the Week - Riley Collins, Drew

Drew University's Riley Collins enjoyed a tremendous opening week, averaging 27.3 points per game to lead the Rangers to a 3-0 start. He was named MVP of Drew's Larry Horner C'40 Rose City Classic after scoring a tournament-record 59 points over two games. In the championship game, he poured in a career-high 35 points in an 88-73 win over Washington and Lee while shooting 11-for-17 and 4-for-6 from 3-point range. He helped the Rangers hold off a late rally by scoring 16 points in the final 4:56. Collins opened the tournament with 24 points in a 73-69 win over Wheaton (Mass.), shooting 9-for-16 and 6-for-10 from beyond the arc, and he also scored 23 points in Drew's season-opening 76-70 victory at FDU-Florham. For the week, Collins shot 53.7 percent from the field, 52.4 percent (11-for-21) from 3-point land, and 92.9 percent (13-for-14) at the foul line.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Maddie Capuano, Moravian

Moravian College junior Maddie Capuano helped Moravian to a 3-0 week and the championship of the Kean (N.J.) University Classic were she was named the MVP after averaging 27.7 ppg for the week. Capuano also added 3.7 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game while averaging 34.0 minutes per contest. She was 27-for-56 from the floor, 13-of-29 on three-pointers and 16-for-19 at the foul line. Capuano started the week with a career high 33 points to go with two rebounds and four assists in 27 minutes during a 71-55 win over Penn State Lehigh Valley. She then had 30 points with four rebounds, five steals and three assists in 37 minutes during a come-from-behind win over the University of Lynchburg (Va.). Capuano finished the week with 20 points, five rebounds and three assists in 38 minutes in a 61-58 win over Eastern University.

Men's Athlete of the Week - John Fimmano, Scranton

University of Scranton sophomore John Fimmano helped the Royals put together a solid third place finish at the Diamond City Invitational over the weekend, as he won two individual events, both of which were contested on Sunday. He dominated in the 200-butterfly, winning the event by almost five seconds, and also helped three relay teams to a trio of top-three finishes, as well.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Mal Vishwanath, Drew

Drew University junior Mal Vishwanath won three events as the Rangers split a pair of dual meets with Arcadia and Elizabethtown. She cruised to convincing victories in the 1000-freestyle (10:46.96), 200-freestyle (1:58.15), and 500-freestyle (5:15.30) as Drew defeated Etown 164-96 but lost 136-126 to Arcadia. She won by 13 seconds in the 1000, three seconds in the 200, and eight seconds in the 500 while posting the top times in the Landmark Conference this season in both the 1000 and 500.
