Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

Men’s Basketball
Conference play opened for the men’s basketball teams, with Drew University, Moravian College, University of Scranton, and Susquehanna University all collecting wins. The Rangers defeated Catholic University 68-51, while the Greyhounds defeated Elizabethtown College 88-72. The Royals earned an impressive 85-66 win against Goucher and the River Hawks survived overtime against Juniata, winning 72-64.

Women’s Basketball
Drew University opened Landmark play with a 42-39 win over Catholic. Moravian and Elizabethtown went down to the wire, with the Greyhounds edging the Blue Jays 93-92. Juniata College earned its first conference win of the season, defeating Susquehanna, 66-58. Scranton picked up a 85-48 win over Goucher.

Track & Field

The 2018-19 indoor track & field kicked off last week with all seven teams in action. Moravian College competed at the Lehigh University Season Opener, while Catholic University and Elizabethtown College ran at Franklin & Marshall. Goucher College, Juniata College, University of Scranton, and Susquehanna University competed at the River Hawk Season Opener.

Men's Athlete of the Week - Zach Knecht, Susquehanna

(Jr, F - Parkland, Fla.)

Susquehanna junior Zach Knecht went 15-of-21 from the field on the week. He scored 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting and had 12 rebounds as he took over the game against Juniata to win first conference matchup. He also added two steals, one assist, and one block. Knecht scored 21 points, while shooting 72.7 percent (8-of-11) and had 11 rebounds against Misericordia. For the week, he averaged 19.5 points while shooting 71.4 percent from the floor and averaged 11.5 rebounds.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Nadine Ewald, Moravian

(Jr., C - Allentown, Pa.)

Junior Nadine Ewald helped Moravian to a 2-0 week including a 93-92 win over Elizabethtown College to begin the 2018-19 Landmark Conference season as she sank the winning free throw with 3.3 seconds left. Ewald averaged 23.0 points and 10.0 rebounds during the week in 59 minutes of action, and she was 19-for-31 from the floor (61.3 percent). Ewald had 18 points and seven rebounds in a 77-65 victory at Immaculata University.

Men's Athlete of the Week - Michael Ma, Drew

Men's Athlete of the Week - Michael Ma, Drew

(Jr., Redwood City, Calif.)

Junior Michael Ma had a hand in six victories and three school records while helping Drew capture the Ranger Invitational. He won the 200-IM (1:56.46), the 200-butterfly (1:58.57), the backstroke (1:56.42), the 200-freestyle relay (1:26.40), the 400-medley relay (3:34.62), and the 400-freestyle relay (3:11.55). He broke school records in both the 200-butterfly and 200-backstroke, which had stood for 16 years. He also swam on the 200-free relay that lowered the Drew record. Ma's times in the 200-IM and 200-back currently lead the Landmark Conference.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Mal Vishwanath, Drew

(Jr., Bangalore, India)

Junior Mal Vishwanath placed first in seven of her eight events, earned two NCAA B cuts, and contributed to a pair of school records while helping Drew win the Ranger Invitational. Individually, she won the 200-freestyle (1:51.95), 500-freestyle (5:03.70), and 1,650-freestyle (17:17.39) while achieving B cuts in both the 200 and 1650 and lowering her own school record in the 200. She also swam as an exhibition competitor in the 100-freestyle and placed first in 53.27. In the relays, Vishwanath helped the 400-medley (4:03.52) and 400-freestyle (3:40.06) squads to victory. In addition, she helped the exhibitioned 800-freestyle relay team finish first and reset the school record in 7:54.40.

Men's Track Athlete of the Week - Zion Howard, Moravian

Men's Track Athlete of the Week - Zion Howard, Moravian

(So., Moorestown, N.J.)

Moravian College sophomore Zion Howard helped the Greyhounds to a strong showing in the Lehigh University Season opener by capturing the 60-meter dash in 7.07 seconds and winning the 200-meter dash in 22.35 seconds. He also ran the anchor leg of the Greyhounds' 4x400-meter relay squad that was second in a time of 3:29.93.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week - Chris Petraskie, Susquehanna

(Jr., Shamokin, Pa.)

Susquehanna junior Chris Petraski opened the 2018-19 indoor track & field season with a first-place finish in the high jump. The senior won with a winning leap of 2.03 meters. He also placed sixth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.23.

Women's Track Athlete of the Week - Abby Grabowski, Catholic

(So., Frederick, Md.)

Catholic University Abby Grabowski broke two school records and had a personal record as the Cardinals opened the 2018-19 indoor track & field season at the Franklin & Marshall Diplomat Open. She placed fourth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.45, and hit her PR in the 200 meter dash with a time of 27.82.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week - Martha Thorpe, Moravian

(So., Bridgeton, N.J.)

Moravian College sophomore Martha Thorpe was the runner-up in the long jump at the Lehigh University Season Opener with a leap of 5.03 meters (16-6), and she was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 10.09 meters (33-1.25).
