Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

Field Hockey
Three institutions went undefeated over the weekend, with Elizabethtown College earning two wins. The Blue Jays defeated Frostburg State, 2-0 on the road and edged Dickinson 1-0 in their home opener. Juniata College earned a 1-0 win over Alvernia and The University of Scranton picked up a 2-1 win over Muhlenberg to round out the undefeated teams. Susquehanna University split a pair of games over the weekend to start the season at 1-1.

Men’s Soccer
Three teams finished the weekend with perfect records. Catholic University defeated Baruch 2-0. Juniata College earned two hard-fought wins against Allegheny College and Wilson College. After committing a foul in the box, the Alleghany converted the penalty kick to take an early 1-0 lead. The Eagles answered with a goal from Jacob Grove, but it was rookie Bass Diakhoumpa that earned the victory for JC, scoring his first collegiate goal via a penalty. A day later, Michael Realbuto was the hero for the Eagles, scoring the golden goal at the 102:03 mark. The University of Scranton outscored its opponents 7-3 over two games. The Royals defeated Arcadia 3-2 on Friday and picked up the 4-1 win over Alvernia on Saturday.

Women’s Soccer
The eight institutions went a combined 11-2-1 over the weekend, and all eight teams earned at least one win. Catholic University, Juniata College, and The University of Scranton all went 2-0, while Elizabethtown College, Goucher College were 1-0. Susquehanna University ended the weekend with a 1-0-1 record while Drew University and Moravian College split games to finish at 1-1.

Volleyball
Catholic University was the lone team to remain undefeated after opening weekend. The Cardinals dropped just one set over their four games. The University of Scranton posted a 3-1 record while Moravian College and Susquehanna University went 2-2.

Men's Athlete of the Week - Greg Jaindl, Moravian

Men's Athlete of the Week - Greg Jaindl, Moravian

(Jr, Macungie, Pa.)

Moravian College junior Greg Jaindl won the 5,000-meter race at the Bulldog Invitational hosted by DeSales University in a time of 16:01 to begin the 2018 season and help Moravian finish first of the three teams competing.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Erin Reese, Susquehanna

Susquehanna junior Erin Reese was the top Division III finisher at the Bison Open, hosted by Bucknell. Her time of 14:58.60 is the second best 4k time in her career. Overall, the junior placed 44th of a field of 132.

Offensive Athlete of the Week - Gracie McClatchy, Scranton

Sophomore Megan Gallagher scored both of Scranton's goals in a 2-1 victory at Muhlenberg in Friday night's season-opener. The sophomore opened the scoring in the fourth minute of the game before netting the eventual game-winner in the 19th minute as the Royals held on to edge the Mules on the road.

Defensive Athlete of the Week - Margo Donlin, Elizabethtown

Senior goalie Margo Donlin helped Elizabethtown get off to a 2-0 start over the weekend with back-to-back shutouts. She needed just two saves on Friday at Frostburg State in a 2-0 win and came back to stop four shots at home against Dickinson as the Blue Jays won 1-0. In total, Donlin made six saves.

Scranton junior Jon Roberts assisted on four of Scranton's seven goals over the weekend as the Royals opened the season with a pair of victories. Roberts set up Scranton's game-winning goal in a 3-2 comeback win over Arcadia on Friday night before record three helpers in a 4-1 victory over Alvernia on Saturday, assisting on Royals' final three goals including his second assist on a game-winning goal in as many games.

Juniata junior Andrew Yeich went 2-0 in the Eagles opening weekend. The junior kept the Eagles in the game against Allegheny, making three stops to help JC to the 2-1 victory. On Saturday, Yeich earned his first shutout of the season, making three saves in the 1-0 win against Wilson.

Catholic University Elizabeth Johnson scored twice and assisted three times in two matches this week, leading Catholic to two shutout wins.In the 5-0 win against DeSales, the junior earned six points (2 goals, 2 assists) and was 1-1 on penalty kicks.

Catholic University sophomore Nina Fernandez earned two clean sheet wins this week, making 10 saves total. In the 2-0 shutout against York, Fernandez made four saves and followed up that performance with six saves in the 5-0 win against DeSales.

Athlete of the Week - Maria Gonzales, Catholic

Catholic University sophomore Maria Gonzales was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Route 42 Classic after the Cardinals were the only team out of 10 to finish undefeated (4-0). She was one of just two players to start all four matches for Catholic and one of only four to play in all 13 sets. She totaled 10 service aces for an average of 0.77 per set. She also finished second on the team with 33 digs. She totaled 35 assists in a 3-1 win over Lynchburg, two short of her career high.
