Landmark Announces Athletes of the Week

TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has released the Athletes of the Week. The conference will recognize a student-athlete for each sport based on their contributions to their team throughout the season.

Men’s Basketball
At the halfway point of the season, no Landmark men’s basketball team remains undefeated in the conference. On Wednesday, The University of Scranton dealt Drew University its first conference loss of 2018-19. The Royals (16-3, 5-3 LC) edged the Rangers (15-4, 7-1 LC) 79-71. Drew still sits at the top of the standings, followed by Moravian College (13-6, 6-2 LC), Scranton, and Susquehanna University, who is 12-7 overall and 5-3 in the Landmark.

Women’s Basketball
The University of Scranton 17 game winning streak was finally snapped thanks to a hot-shooting Elizabethtown College. The Blue Jays (12-6, 5-3 LC) defeated the Royals (18-1, 7-1 LC), 64-56 after shooting over 40% from the field. The Royals still sit at the top of the standings, followed by Elizabethtown and Juniata College (7-12, 5-3 LC). Catholic University, Drew University, and Moravian College are all 4-4 in conference play.

Swimming & Diving
Six of the eight swimming & diving teams were in action last week. Goucher College and Susquehanna squared off on Tuesday before the Gophers took on Drew University on Saturday. The University of Scranton swam against Susquehanna on Saturday and Elizabethtown College competed against McDaniel. Catholic University traveled to Howard University and Marywood University competed against Wilkes College.   

Track & Field
It was a busy weekend for track & field. Juniata College and Susquehanna University competed at the Bison Open, hosted by Bucknell University. Elizabethtown College ran at the Little Dip Invite, hosted by Franklin & Marshall and competed at the Covert Classic on Saturday, hosted by Moravian College. The University of Scranton also competed at the Covert Classic. Catholic University and Goucher College ran at the George Mason Patriot Games.

Men's Athlete of the Week - Nate Aldrich, Drew

Men's Athlete of the Week - Nate Aldrich, Drew

(Sr, F - Franklinville, N.J.)

Drew University senior Nate Aldrich posted three consecutive double-doubles, averaging 19.3 points and 14.0 rebounds per game while shooting 63.6 percent from the field in a 2-1 week for the Rangers. In a 66-64 victory over Juniata, who posted 24 points, 14 rebounds, and three blocked shots while shooting 11-for-15 from the field. He also scored his 1,000th career point in the game. In addition, Aldrich had 22 points and 15 rebounds in a victory at Elizabethtown and 12 points and 13 rebounds in a loss at Scranton.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Luca Mamula, Catholic

Catholic University freshman Luca Mamula scored a career-high 28 points while adding five rebounds and four assists as the Cardinals led from start to finish in a convincing 83-58 victory over Goucher Wednesday. She scored 13 points in the opening half, going 6-of-6 from the floor in 11 minutes as the Cardinals built a 17-point halftime lead. She pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds, just missing her first career double double with eight points in as Catholic held Moravian to just 19 percent shooting while forcing 22 turnovers and totaling 17 steals in limiting the Greyhounds to its lowest point total in 20 years with a 62-38 win Saturday.

Men's Athlete of the Week - Eric Towse, Susquehanna

Men's Athlete of the Week - Eric Towse, Susquehanna

(Fr., Staten Island, N.Y.)

Susquehanna University freshman Eric Towse set a pool record in the 100 backstroke (52.71) in the win over Scranton. Towse bested his own pool record of 53.15, which he established back on October 27, 2018 against Bloomsburg. He led off both 200 medley relays.

Women's Athlete of the Week - Mal Vishwanath, Drew

(Jr., Bangalore, India)

Drew University junior Mal Vishwanath placed first in three events as Drew defeated Goucher 141-58. Individually, she captured both the 200-butterfly (2:13.13) and 400-IM (4:44.89). Her time in the 200-fly is the second fastest time in the Landmark this season, while her 400-IM time is the fastest. She also swam the leadoff leg for the winning 400-freestyle relay team (4:01.18).

Men's Track Athlete of the Week - Samuel Gerstenbacher, Elizabethtown

Men's Track Athlete of the Week - Samuel Gerstenbacher, Elizabethtown

(Jr., Pittsgrove, N.J.)

Elizabethtown junior Samuel Gerstenbacher won his third individual race of the indoor season on Saturday at the Moravian College Indoor Meet. Gerstenbacher finished first in the mile with the Landmark's top time of the season of 4:20.05. He was also a leg on the 4x400m relay that finished 9th in 3:37.37.

Men's Field Athlete of the Week - Chris Petraskie, Susquehanna

Men's Field Athlete of the Week - Chris Petraskie, Susquehanna

(Jr., Shamokin, Pa.)

Susquehanna University junior Chris Petraskie broke the program record for the Heptathlon with a total score of 4,395. He came in fourth out of 15 contestants, competing against Division l and Division ll athletes. He also placed first in the high jump (2.00m).

Women's Track Athlete of the Week - Kiera Lyons, Catholic

(Sr., Harwood, Md.)

Catholic University senior Kiera Lyons ran a career best at the Patriot Games in the 3000m race, crossing the finish line in fourth with a time of 10:40.01. The time is the second fastest in the Landmark this season. She also placed seventh in the mile race, posting a time of 5:20.88, which is the fastest time this season in the conference.

Women's Field Athlete of the Week - Kelli Garriott, Elizabethtown

(Fr., Hampstead, Md.)

Elizabethtown freshman cleared 1.66m (5'5.25") on her second attempt to win the high jump at the Moravian College Indoor Meet. It was the best mark in the Landmark this indoor season and also broke E-town's 15-year-old school record of 1.62m (5'4").
