Mariners Ride Hot Offense To Win Over Catholic

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Doug Carter knocks in four runs to lead the USMMA baseball team in a 10-4 win over Catholic University to take the series. The Mariners have now won all but one Landmark Conference series on the season. David May helped out going 3-for-3 with four runs scored, one run batted in and a solo homerun. Alex Smith picked up his first victory on the season going 5.1 innings with three strikeouts and giving up just two runs.

The Cardinals had a strong first inning but were only able to plate one run in the inning. Thanks to a Mariners double play they were able to get out of the inning with the game still in control. Goodman single through the left side to score Bowles for the only run of the inning in the top of the first. The Mariners responded in the bottom of the first with two runs to take a 2-1 lead. Both runs came in on a two-out two RBI double to left field by Carter.

USMMA increased its lead to 4-1 with two more runs in the bottom of the third. Darin Coleman led off the inning with a double to right center. Frank Pierson moved Coleman over to third on a fly ball to right field. After a Mike Bybee ground out, May walked to put runners on the corners. Carter then singled to center field to plate Coleman from third and move May over to third. With runners at the corners again, May would come into score on a passed ball by the catcher.

The Mariners took a commanding 8-1 lead with four runs in the bottom of the fifth. Bybee led off the inning with a single to left field followed by a May single through the right side with Bybee moving to third on a fielding error by the right fielder. With runners at the corners, May stole second. Bybee came into score and May moved to third on a balk by the pitcher. Carter plated May for the second run of the inning on a single up the middle. David Dorfman drove in the third run on a single through the right side. The final run scored on a RBI single up the middle by Alex Wolfe.

The Cardinals plated their second run of the game in the top of the sixth on a RBI double to left center by Picardo. The Mariners got the run back and took a 9-2 lead on a lead off solo homerun to left field by Bybee. The Cardinals kept battling and made the score 9-3 on a RBI single by Travaglia in the top of the seventh. Catholic then made it 9-4 with another run in the top of the eighth on a RBI double to left center by Devine. May put the Mariners back up six runs with a solo bomb to right field to make it 10-4. Andy Martin stepped onto the mound in the top of the ninth to close out the game and struck out two batters, locking in the Mariners conference victory.

The Mariners return to action on Tuesday, April 14th when they travel to SUNY Maritime. Game time is slated for 7:15 pm.
