AUSTIN, Texas. -- Elizabethtown College outfielder Derek Manning landed a spot on the Google Cloud NCAA Division III Academic All-America First Team, Tuesday, capping off a tremendous 2018 season.
Manning is the first Blue Jay baseball player to be named First Team in 23 years and third in program history, joining Ray Caucci (1984) and Gary Yeager, Jr. (1995). The Academic All-America teams are selected annually by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
The East Petersburg, Pennsylvania native enjoyed a stellar spring on his way to Landmark Conference Player of the Year, ABCA and D3baseball.com All-Mid-Atlantic Region First Team and ABCA All-America Third Team honors.
Manning's 0.56 doubles per game (fourth), program single-season record 22 total doubles (fifth) and .457 batting average (ninth) were marks that all led the Landmark and ranked in the top 10 nationally. He totaled 69 hits, 42nd in Division III and third most in a season in team history, produced E-town's fifth highest single-season batting average, scored 42 runs and drove in 35.
Manning was among the Landmark leaders in slugging percentage (.675) and total bases (102), ranking second in both categories. He was also third in runs scored and sixth in RBIs.
A junior computer engineering major with an unblemished 4.0 GPA, Manning is a six-time Dean's List student. He was identified as an Emergent Scholar by the College in 2017 and is part of the Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society. Manning is the seventh Academic All-American in team history and just completed his sophomore season of athletic eligibility after sitting out the 2017 season.
Manning led all Elizabethtown players in batting average, hits, runs, doubles, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage and on base percentage. He got the job done in the field, too, registering a .973 fielding percentage with 71 putouts and an assist.
Twenty three of the 33 members of the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division III baseball teams have at least a 3.9 GPA. Manning is one of 10 student-athletes maintaining a perfect 4.0 GPA. The seven members of the first team have an average GPA of 3.95.
The 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-America® Division III program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division III national governance structure to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the program in 2017-18.
