Elizabethtown & Scranton Earn ABCA Team Excellence Award

Elizabethtown & Scranton Earn ABCA Team Excellence Award

GREENSBORO, N.C - The Elizabethtown College and University of Scranton baseball teams were honored for proficiency in the classroom, Tuesday, joining nearly 300 programs nationwide as 2017-18 American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Team Academic Excellence Award recipients.

ABCA Team Excellence Award Winners

The ABCA recognized teams from every collegiate level and high school coached by ABCA members that posted a grade point average (GPA) over 3.0 on a 4.0 scale over the course of the entire 2017-18 academic year.

A record 287 teams were honored this year with 76 award recipients coming from NCAA Division III. Of those, Elizabethtown and Scranton represented the Landmark Conference.

Coaches nominated their teams at the conclusion of their spring semesters. First-year head coach and 2009 Elizabethtown College alum Adam Sheibley led the Blue Jays to 21 victories and a spot in the Landmark Conference Championship tournament this past spring. Junior outfielder Derek Manning was named Google Cloud Academic All-America First Team and All-District 4 First Team, while junior catcher Anthony Knight was an All-District 4 First Team honoree.

The University of Scranton baseball team had quite a season on the field, reaching the Landmark Conference championship series as part of a 22-win campaign. But all that hard work didn't stop the Royals from excelling in the classroom, as well.

The Royals received the 2018 ABCA Team Academic Award from the American Baseball Coaches Association, which honors teams that finish with a grade-point average of at least 3.0 for the 2017-18 academic year. The Royals finished the year with a 3.267 GPA.

The American Baseball Coaches Association has a long tradition of recognizing the achievements of baseball coaches and student-athletes. The ABCA/Rawlings All-America Teams are the nation's oldest, founded in 1949, and the ABCA's awards program also includes the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Awards, the ABCA/Diamond Regional & National Coaches of the Year and several other major awards such as the ABCA Hall of Fame and the Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award.
