Drew Rallies To Claim First Conference Win

SCRANTON, Pa. - Jen Schoepflin's overtime goal gave the Drew field hockey team a huge 2-1 conference win at Scranton. Schoepflin converted Ryan Hoover's assist and Lizz Law's second half goal equalized for the Rangers. Drew is now 7-3 overall and 1-1 in league play, while the loss was the second straight for Scranton, now 3-6 overall and 1-1 in the Landmark Conference.
Late in the first-half, Scranton took a 1-0 lead on a goal by freshman midfielder Corrie Szapka her third of the season. On a penalty corner, junior midfielder Diana Rocklein controlled the ball at the top of the circle, got by a Ranger defender, and then sent a shot towards the goal that was deflected in by Szapka. Rocklein's assist was her third on the year.
The Royals had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard
moments earlier on a scramble in front of the Ranger goal.
Senior forward Karolyn Holody sent a shot towards the Drew goal
that was knocked away at the last moment by Ranger senior back
Allison Segal, who was credited with a defensive save on the
play.
Less than seven minutes into the second-half, Drew senior forward
Whitney Kerns send a picture-perfect ball from the right side line
into the front of the Royal cage that was tapped in by Law for her
team-leading sixth goal of the season.
In the overtime period, the Royals had a golden opportunity to win, but Ranger sophomore goalie Stef Rutkowski knocked away two shots by Rocklein, one on a penalty corner and the other on a ball served in from the sideline. Rutkowski finished with a game-high eight saves.
Drew then went on the offensive and got the ball down the field
and into scoring position. Senior forward Ryan Hoover crossed
a ball to Schoepflin, who tapped a shot past Scranton goalie
Kristina Goetz for the game-winner.
The Rangers evened their Landmark Conference record at 1-1 with the
win.
