Carugan's Two Tallies Help Royals To Win
SCRANTON, Pa. - Sophomore forward Liz Carugan (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay Senior) scored two goals and junior forward Margaret Mathewson (Dallas, Pa./Bishop O'Reilly) added a goal and an assist to lead The University of Scranton to a 3-0 victory over Richard Stockton College (N.J.) in non-conference action Tuesday evening at the Fitzpatrick Field.
The victory snapped a five-game losing streak for the Royals, now 4-9, while the Ospreys fell to 2-12.
Carugan scored her first goal of the season less than four minutes into the game by deflecting a ball into the goal off of a shot served up by Mathewson. Mathewson then gave the Royals a 2-0 advantage by intermission by taking a cross from senior forward Sarah Scott (Franklin, N.J./Wallkill Valley) and tapped in a shot from 10 yards out for her second goal of the season at the 27:16 mark.
With 12 minutes remaining the game, Carugan tapped in a ball that deflected off the cage for an unassisted goal to close out the scoring.
Freshman goalie Debi O'Kane (Cologne, N.J./Absegami) made a game-high 11 saves for Richard Stockton, while Scranton's Kristina Goetz (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) turned away two shots to earn her third shutout of the season and the eighth of her career. Defensively, Scranton did not allow a shot on goal in the first-half and only two for the game.
The start of the game was delayed 50 minutes and another 20 minutes early in the second-half due to lightning in the area.
