Scranton Shuts Down Vassar For First Win

MILTON, N.Y. - A pair of freshmen came to the forefront in The University of Scranton's 3-0 victory over Vassar College Thursday evening at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome.

Corrie Szapka (Northampton, Pa./Allentown Central Catholic) scored two goals within a span of 16 minutes in the first-half and Beth McLauglin (Middletown, N.J./Middletown South) added an insurance goal at the 31-minute mark as the Royals evened their record at 1-1.  With the loss, Vassar fell to 0-1.

Junior goalie Kristina Goetz (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park Memorial) made three saves for her sixth career shutout.  She got plenty of help from senior back Michele Campo (Sparta, N.J./Pope John XXIII), senior midfielder Jillian Chrest (Drexel Hill, Pa./Merion Mercy Academy) and freshman back Emily Deubler (Dallas, Pa./Bishop O'Reilly), who anchored a Royal defensive unit that limited Vassar to only four shot attempts.

Szapka scored her first goal, unassisted, on a scramble in front of the Vassar goal at the 11-minute mark, then came back to add another goal at the 27-minute mark on a feed from junior midfielder Diana Rocklein (Islip Terrace, N.Y./East Islip).  Four minutes later, McLaughlin converted a penalty corner for a goal on a ball served up by senior forward Karolyn Holody (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn).  Scranton held a 13-4 advantage in shots and an 11-4 margin in penalty corners.

Ellie Pomerantz and Taylor Herman split time in goal for Vassar and combined for eight saves.

The Royals will close out a three-game road trip this Saturday, September 8, against Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
