USMMA Men Get Back On Track With Road Conference Win
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The United States Merchant Marine Academy
men’s basketball team defeated Moravian College Saturday
afternoon 72-53. The Mariners improve to 16-4 overall, 7-2 Landmark
Conference while the Greyhounds fall to 5-15 overall, 1-8 Landmark
Conference.
The Mariners opened the game on a 22-9 run capped by senior Chad
Ray’s (Carrollton, TX) three-pointer with 8:36 remaining in
the first half. Junior Tom Izzo (Bridgeport, WV) knocked down a
jumper with 1:05 remaining in the half for the 34-14 halftime lead.
Izzo had 18 points and four rebounds to lead the Mariners in the
first frame while Ray added nine points on 3-4 shooting from behind
the arc. Freshman Nnamdi Njoku (Westampton, NJ) led the way for the
greyhounds with seven points and two steals.
In the second half, the Mariners would push the lead to as many as
21 with the final time coming off another three-pointer from Ray
with 1:10 remaining in the game. USMMA was led by Ray’s 23
points on 7-9 shooting from behind the arc. Izzo added 22 points,
five rebounds, four assists and two steals while junior Matt Hueber
(Alexandria, VA) added a double-double with ten points and 12
rebounds. The greyhounds were led by junior Chris Cullen (East
Islip, NY) who had 15 points and three rebounds.
The Mariners return to action on Friday, February 5th when they
travel to Susquehanna University. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
