Cardinals Win Defensive Battle
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The Catholic University men's lacrosse team
won its second straight Monday with a 6-4 victory over the Eastern
University Eagles (3-8). The teams went into halftime tied but a
big fourth quarter from the Cards sealed the win. CUA is now 6-5 on
the season.
After a scoreless first quarter, Eastern took a 1-0 lead early in
the second on a man-up goal. Two minutes later Jimmy Sinnott (Blue
Bell, Pa./LaSalle) made it 1-1 off of a pass from Mike DiGiesi
(Cherry Hill, N.J./St Joseph's Prep). However, the Eagles hit one
more shot in the half but with 4:21 remaining John Volpe (Newton,
Pa./Notre Dame) found the back of the cage taking the assist from
Mike Groh (Walpole, Mass./Xaverian Bros) to knot it at two.
The teams traded goal in the third quarter with Eastern once again
striking first but the Cards answering back. Mike Scotto (Belmar,
N.J./St Rose) tied it at three thanks to an unassisted tally at the
three-minute mark. With the scoring wavering back and forth, the
Cardinals broke it open in the fourth. Scotto notched his second
goal of the day early on and despite Eastern's quick reply it was
CUA's game to win. In the final nine minutes Kyle Brant (Silver
Spring, Md./St. John's) hit a shot off of the assist from Scotto
and Sinnott added his second of the day during a man-up situation
to make the final 6-4.
The Cardinals controlled the offensive game with 26 shots to
Eastern's 11 and a 23-19 advantage in ground balls. CUA was also
8-13 on face-offs. Scotto led the Cards with three points for the
game while DiGiesi and Sinnott each added two.
The Cards will host USMMA on Saturday in a Landmark Conference
match-up.
