Catholic Men's Lacrosse Claims Win In Season Opener

ASHINGTON, Va. -- Led by Chris Fucillo and Mike Groh with four
and three goals, respectively, The Catholic University men's
lacrosse team (1-0) downed Wesley (0-2) 11-7 in the 2010 season
opener at Cardinal Stadium.
The Cardinals never trailed in the contest, scoring the first goal
with 10:44 remaining in the first quarter. Mark Saxton took a pass
from Nathan Chan and found mesh, putting the hosts up 1-0 early.
Wesley evened the score with an unassisted tally from Brad Smith
only 1:13 later. Two goals late in the first quarter put the Cards
up 4-2 heading into the first break.
Wesley knotted the game with 8:43 remaining in the second stanza,
but Jimmy Sinnott answered quickly with a blast only 39 seconds
later. The Wolverines scored again but a pair of goals from Fucillo
put the Cardinals up for good.
CUA was outshot in the contest, 48-39, but the Cardinal shooters
were on target, forcing 11 saves by Wesley keeper Markus Giarusso.
The ground game was all CUA with the hosts grabbing 54 ground balls
to Wesley's 37.
The Cardinals will return to action on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at 1
p.m. as CUA will hosts Cazenovia at Cardinal Stadium.
