Scranton Ends Historic Match With Overtime Goal
KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The University of Scranton men's soccer
program made history Saturday afternoon against the United States
Merchant Marine Academy.
In the first intercollegiate athletic event between two league
members in the newly formed Landmark Conference, the Royals erased
a 1-0 halftime deficit to pull out a 2-1 victory in overtime.
Early in the second-half, Scranton tied it up on a goal by
sophomore midfielder Jeff Bochicchio (Lake Ariel, Pa./North
Pocono), who headed in a shot on a ball served up by junior
midfielder Pat Page (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport) for his first
goal of the season. The Royals pulled out the win on a goal by
leading scorer Tim Logan (Spotswood, N.J./Spotswood) at the
96-minute mark. Logan's goal was his fifth of the season and 22nd
of his career. It was also his ninth game-winning goal of his
career.
Freshman goalie Brandon Dombrowski (Hockessin, Del./Salesianum)
made a match-high seven saves for the Royals, who improved to 4-2
overall and 1-0 in the Landmark Conference. Preston Stokes made
three saves for the Mariners, who fell to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in
league play. USMMA, the pre-season favorite in the Landmark
Conference coaches' poll, got on the scoreboard in the 44th minute
of the first-half on a goal by Jeff Castro.
The Royals will return to action this Wednesday, September 19, by
hosting the Devils of FDU-Florham at 7:30 p.m. at Fitzpatrick
Field.
