USMMA Sinks Nationally Ranked Foe

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The United States Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team upset No. 4 Stevens Tech, 1-0, on Wednesday night. Junior Rusty Denson netted the only goal of the game to lead the Mariners past the Ducks.

With the victory, the Mariners were able to end the Ducks streak of 34 straight games without a loss. This was also the highest ranked team that the Mariners have beaten in the Michael Smolens coaching era.

USMMA improves to 8-5 overall, 3-1 in Landmark Conference action. Stevens Tech falls to 11-1-2 overall, 4-0 in Empire 8 play.

"We went out there with the idea to take it to the Ducks and we responded with an early goal," said Head Coach Michael Smolens. "We kept our composure throughout the game, playing solid and playing hard. The guys played smart and we did what we needed to do to keep the lead.  This was a terrific effort by the team."

"The win feels great," said Tri-Captain Chris Nitta. "This was a big game for the seniors and also a big win for the team. Everyone on the team put in a great effort for us to win tonight."   The Mariners got on the board quickly in the 3rd minute of the game to go up 1-0 and would never look back.

Clint Foster took a throw in and placed a touch pass to Denson. Denson then proceeded to take a shot from the right side and was able to knock it in the goal.

Preston Stokes got the start in goal for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and had a career night, making six saves on six opportunities. Stevens Tech's Zach Carr did not make any saves on one opportunity.

The Ducks outshot USMMA, 17-3. Stevens Tech also held the advantage over the Mariners in corner kicks, 6-1.

USMMA will return to action on Saturday, October 13th, when they will travel to Goucher. Game time is slated for 12 p.m.
