Merchant Marine Claims Third-Straight Victory

The United States Merchant Marine Academy soccer team won its third game in a row as the Mariners topped Moravian, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon. Junior Kyle Luetjen led the Mariner attack and scored the only goal.

USMMA improves to 6-4 overall, 2-1 in Landmark Conference action. Moravian falls to 3-7 overall, 0-2 in Landmark Conference play.

"In the first half, we were a bit unsettled and neither team really had control of play," said Head Coach Michael Smolens. "In the second half, we attacked much more effectively and created a number of chances. Despite being disappointed at not being able to finish our numerous chances more often, we were pleased to get the victory."   T

he Mariners scored the loan goal in the second half of the match. Luetjen received a pass from teammate Joe Castro and was able to knock it by Greyhound goalkeeper Chris Nederostek. The goal was scored in the 72nd minute of the game.

"Kyle Luetjen's goal was a nice bit of combination play between Castro and Luetjen for us to get the goal," said Smolens.   Preston Stokes got the start in goal for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and ended the day with three saves on three opportunities. Moravian's Nederostek made four saves on five opportunities.

USMMA outshot the Greyhounds, 21-11. The Mariners held the advantage over Moravian in corner kicks, 4-1.

USMMA will return to action on Wednesday, October 3rd, when it will play host to William Paterson. Game time is slated for 7:45 p.m. at Captain Tomb Field. Wednesday's game will feature a web cast and radio broadcast for Mariner fans who can not make it to the game.
