Overtime Goal Leads Mariners Past Rival Coast Guard

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Chris Flanagan scored a goal in overtime to lead the United States Merchant Marine Academy to a 1-0 victory over the United States Coast Guard Academy on Saturday afternoon.
Daniel Twito and Kyle Luetjen assisted on the Mariner tally. The Mariners remain unbeaten against the Bears since 1999. USMMA improves to 2-2 overall, 0-0 in Landmark Conference action. Coast Guard falls to 1-1 overall, 0-0 in NEWMAC play.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy scored the only goal of the game in overtime. Luetjen started the passing as he dished a pass up head to Twito, who then placed a cross to Flanagan. Flanagan took the cross and placed a header into the back of the net.
Preton Stokes got the start in goal for the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and ended the day with five saves on seven opportunities. Coast Guard's Tim Olah made six saves on eight opportunities. In addition to the shutout by Stokes, David Poulnot recorded a save in the first half when the ball slipped past Stokes. Twito also had a save in the game, which came in the second half on a cross from the Bears.
USMMA outshot USCGA for the game, 19-15. The Mariners tied with the Bears in corner kicks, 5-5.
USMMA will return to action on Wednesday, September 12th, when it will play host to Farmingdale State. Game time is slated for 7:45 p.m. at Captain Tomb Field.
