Cassie Arroyo Named New USMMA Softball Coach

KING'S POINT, N.Y. - After completing a short stint as the Sports Information Director and Assistant Coach of the softball team at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Cassie Arroyo was recently named Senior Woman Administrator and Head Softball Coach. The announcement was made by Athletic Director Sue Petersen Lubow. Arroyo also becomes the first person to hold the title of Senior Woman Administrator at the Academy and will oversee the Sports Information Department.

"Having worked with Cassie these past six months, I am thrilled that she accepted the opportunity to be SWA/Head Softball Coach at the Academy," said Petersen Lubow on Arroyo. "This department has never had a Senior Woman Administrator title before, because as I am a female Athletic Director, it was not required. I look forward to the new year with another female in an administrator role to not only guide our female programs, but many of our men's."

Arroyo, an alumna of Southampton College, helped to guide the softball team to a winning record (18-16) this past spring. The Mariners had five student-athletes named All-Skyline and Jess LaValley was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Year. The team also advanced to the four-team Skyline Tournament. She also served as the Sports Information Director during the tail end of the winter season and through the spring and will oversee the department in her role as SWA.

Additionally, Arroyo was the head coach of the junior varsity girls basketball team at McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead, N.Y. this past winter. The team finished 10-3 overall and completed its first undefeated season in league play (9-0) in school history. For her efforts, Arroyo was recognized as the Junior Varsity Coach of the Year. She was awarded the Suffolk County Sportsmanship Award by the Suffolk County Girls Basketball Coaches Association.

Prior to coming to USMMA, Arroyo served as the Sports Information Director of Suffolk County Community College in Selden, N.Y. and as an assistant coach for soccer, basketball and softball at McGann-Mercy High School during the 2005-06 academic year.

Between 2001-05, Arroyo served in a variety of roles in athletics at Southampton College. She served as the Sports Information Director and Assistant Athletic Director, the Director of Intramurals and the Head Softball Coach at the NCAA Division II institution.

Furthermore, she was the Interim Head Women's Basketball Coach for the 2004-05 season. The club won the Division II ECAC Championship and Arroyo was named the NYCAC Coach of the Year and All-Metropolitan Coach of the Year.

She graduated from Southampton College cum laude in 1998 with a B.A. in marketing management and a minor in sports marketing. Arroyo was also a four-year letterwinner with the softball program as a catcher and a pitcher as well as a two-year letterwinner with the women's soccer team.

The new SWA/Head Softball Coach is a native of Bayport, N.Y. and currently resides in Kings Point, N.Y.
