Moravian Gets Two Gems To Sweep Twinbill

READING, Pa. - The Greyhounds swept their third straight
doubleheader and their seventh game in a row overall behind the
first career no-hitter by freshman Elizabeth Python as Moravian
defeated Albright College, 9-0 in five innings, in the second game
of a non-conference doubleheader. It came after junior Maria
DeBonis tossed her second perfect game of the season in a 3-0 win
in game one. The victory was Moravian's seventh straight by
shutout, tying a school record set last season, and the Greyhounds
have not allowed a run in 46 innings, four innings shy of the mark
of 50 set in 2007.
In game two Python improved to 7-2 in the circle with her fifth
straight win, third by shutout. Python struck out three batters and
may have had the Greyhounds' second perfect game of the
doubleheader if the leadoff batter in the fourth inning had not
reached base on a Moravian error.
The Greyhounds would give Python all of the offense she needed with
a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Freshman shortstop
Amanda Paulus led off the game with a single and moved to second on
a sacrifice bunt by junior outfielder Erica Klepeisz. Senior
catcher Beth Paly followed with an RBI double to score Paulus, and
Paly would cross the plate on an RBI single by senior outfielder
Megan Ritchey.
Moravian added a run in the top of the third inning for a 3-0 lead
when Klepeisz singled to lead off the inning and eventually scored
on a double-steal with freshman first baseman Jennifer Schmitt. The
Greyhounds pushed six runs across the plate in the top of the
fourth inning to use the NCAA eight-run rule. Freshman designated
player Amie Ballo led off the inning with a walk and scored on an
RBI single by Paulus. After Klepeisz walked, Paly singled to load
the bases. Schmitt then reached on an RBI fielder's choice that
kept the bases loaded for Ritchey, who delivered another RBI
single. Freshman third baseman Maura Agnew hit an RBI ground out
that scored Paly before freshman outfielder Megan Boyle finished
off the inning with a two-RBI double.
The Greyhounds finished the game with ten hits including
three-for-four performances by Paly and Paulus and Ritchey going
two-for-three. The Lions used three pitchers in the game with Mary
Dwyer taking the loss in three-plus innings of work.
In game one the Greyhounds earned a 3-0 victory behind the second
perfect game of the season by DeBonis, who improved to 6-3 on the
season. DeBonis, who has tossed three no-hitters this season,
struck out ten Lions for her third straight shutout. The victory
was the Greyhounds' sixth in a row, all by shutout.
Moravian would give DeBonis all of the offense she needed with a
run in the top of the first inning. Freshman shortstop Stephanie
Falzarano led off the game with a single and stole second base.
Falzarano eventually scored on an RBI single by senior third
baseman Kelly Santry.
The Greyhounds would get two insurance runs in the top of the sixth
inning. Santry led off the inning with a single and junior first
baseman Sheri Bieniek followed with a double to put two runners in
scoring position. DeBonis would reach on an error that allowed
Santry to score, and Bieniek would cross the plate on an RBI
sacrifice fly by junior catcher Deanna Mangieri.
Moravian had eight hits in the game with thee by Falzarano and two
from Santry. Dana Partollari suffered the loss for Albright,
allowing three runs, two of the earned, on eight hits and a walk
with one strikeout.
