USMMA Men's Swimming Ties Nationally-Ranked Foe
KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The United States Merchant Marine Academy
men’s swimming and diving team tied #17 ranked Stevens
Institute of Technology this evening, 147-147. The Mariners record
goes to 6-2-1 while the Ducks go to 6-0-1.
Sophomore Trevor Mays (Southlake, TX) won the 200 freestyle
(1:44.34) and the 100 freestyle (48.27) to pace the Mariners.
Freshman Sean Minor (Fort Meyers, FL) came in second in the race
with a time of 49.04. In the 100 backstroke, senior John Murphy
(Fairfax, VA) won with a time of 53.73 while fellow senior Scott
Pearson (Pace, FL) came in second at 55.01. Freshman Joshua Sindorf
(Lancaster, PA) had two season best times on the night. He dropped
15 seconds off his 1000 freestyle coming in at 10:27.57 while also
dropping four seconds off his 500 freestyle with a time of
5:04.66.
Nicholas Halbach won the 1 meter diving with a score of 344.18,
which broke the Academy record held by 2004 National Champion Joel
Meyer. Halbach now holds every diving record at the Academy.
Halbach also won the 3 meter diving with a score of 321.98. The
meet came down to the final race of the evening, the 400 yard
freestyle relay. Freshman Jordan Edler (Gretna, LA), senior Pavel
Milke (Rumson, NJ), junior Andrew Denning (Las Vegas, NV) and Mays
won the event in 3:12.50 to seal the victory for the Mariners.
The Mariners return to action on Friday, February 12th when they
will swim in the Landmark Championships.
