TOWSON, Md. – Susquehanna University earned 68 points and six first-place votes to lead the 2017-18 Landmark Women's Swimming Preseason Poll. The University of Scranton picked up 58 points and the two remaining first-place nods for second while Catholic University came in third with tallies and Drew University in fourth with 34 points.
The River Hawks won their seventh straight title in 2017 thanks to strong performances from graduated senior Ashlee Weingarten. Weingarten won the 200 fly with a time of 2:06.68 to lead the River Hawks on day three of the Landmark Conference Championships. Throughout the weekend, Weingarten was responsible for three individual championships and two relay championships, earning her 2017 Women's Swimmer of the Meet honors. SU returns Joann Butkus, Katie Willis and Jessica Jozefiak to this year's team, all of which were all-conference performers a year ago.
Second-year head coach Mark Yankovich returns the nucleus of a Royals team that was runners-up at the 2017 Landmark Conference Championships. The team returns all three individual All-Landmark Conference selections in Raquel Wasserman, Claire Mason, and Emma Ilseman from a season ago and the majority of the All-Landmark relay squads.
With the loss of just one scoring team member in Meaghan Rush and the addition of 10 newcomers the Cardinals look to advance their team finish at the Conference Championships. Emily Messina will compete in the 200 butterfly after a second-place finish a year ago and will be joined by second-team all-conference selections Basira Knight (100 breaststroke), Madison Amann (200 medley relay), and Rachel Zarlinski (200 medley relay).
Drew's last year's recruiting class earned its first individual honors in program history. Mal Vishwanath won three events on her way to earning the Landmark Rookie of the Year award while Jenny Steinman earned Diver of the Year accolades after setting new championship records in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. Stein earned 395.45 points in the 1-meter and totaled 409.40 in the 3-meter.
Rounding out the coaches' poll is Marywood University in fifth with 23 points, Goucher College in sixth (17 points), Elizabethtown College in seventh with 16 points, and Juniata College in eighth with eight points.
