Gartner's Double-Double Carries Mariners Past Gophers

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - Senior center Morgan Gartner recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the United States Merchant Marine Academy women's basketball team in a 78-55 victory over Goucher College on Saturday afternoon.

The Mariners had four players with double-digit points and defensively held the league's leading scorer, Shadae Swan, to 11 points. Before playing USMMA, Swan had recorded eight consecutive games with 20 or more points.

USMMA improved to 12-8 overall and 4-5 in Landmark Conference play while Goucher fell to 7-12 and 2-7 in Landmark Conference play.

"It seems like day two is our day," said Head Coach Mike Murray after the team improved to a perfect 4-0 on the final day of Landmark Conference weekends. "I thought that overall we did a good job of playing team defense today. When we do that, we are going to put ourselves in a position to win a lot of basketball games."

"I thought it was a great team effort," added junior Kristen Hetsko on the win. "We came out hard in the first half. Everyone is saying we are a second day team. We came out intense and played that way the whole game."

Sophomore guard Brooke Picillo matched a season high with 15 points and also recorded five rebounds, three assists and two steals to help the Mariners. Freshman forward Janay Weathers added six points, five rebounds and matched a career high with four assists. Leading the way for the Goucher was Amber Smith with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals. Francheska Guilfu pitched in 11 points, six rebounds and two steals.   T

he Mariners got on the board first when Gartner hit a jumper on a pass from Weathers. The Gophers answered right back with a jumper in the paint by Swan. With 15:12 left, USMMA went on a 9-0 run to increase its lead to 17-8 until Kathleen O'Grady was able to end the run with a three-pointer. Kiersten Healy started an 8-0 run for the Mariners with a jumper in the lane to go up 32-18. With 30 seconds left in the half, Picillo hit her third three-pointer of the game to give the Mariners a 41-24 lead at the break.

Leading the Mariners was Picillo in the first 20 minutes with 13 points and two steals. Goucher was led by O'Grady with five points and five rebounds.

In the second half, USMMA started with a 7-0 run to increase its lead to 48-24. Two possessions later, Candra Scott hit a three-pointer to make the score 50-28. With 11:01 remaining, Goucher went on a 9-0 run to gain some ground on the Mariners and make the score 57-41. USMMA ended the Gophers run with a jumper by Gartner on a pass from Picillo. The Mariners got their lead back up to 20 points with 2:06 left in the game when Karen Taylor hit two free throws to go up 73-52.  Meghan Dillard knocked down the last basket for USMMA and the Mariners held on for the 78-55 victory over the Gophers.

Leading the Mariners was Gartner in the second half with 14 points and nine rebounds. Goucher was led by Smith with 13 points, four rebounds and three steals.

After scoring 20 or more points in eight consecutive games and a total of 15 times this season, Swan's 11 points against the Mariners this afternoon was a season low for the senior.

"That was definitely our top goal coming in," said Hetsko on the team shutting down the conference's leading scorer. "We talked about it yesterday and before the game. Everyone worked really hard (to shut her down)."

"The team did a great job of knowing where she was," added Murray. "It was all five players on the floor that did a great job of locating her throughout the game. That helped us stop her defensively."

The Mariners will face two Landmark Conference opponents next weekend when they travel to Moravian College and the University of Scranton.

"We need to win game one," said Hetsko. "We have been coming out sluggish in the first game and especially that first half. (On Saturday), we need to come out with intensity and play together (as a team)."

"They are fresh in our minds, and hopefully we can bounce back from that tough Scranton match and steal a couple of games on their home courts," said Murray .   The Moravian game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on Saturday and the Scranton match is slated for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
