USMMA Pulls Out Tight Non-Conference Win

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The United States Merchant Marine Academy women’s basketball team battled for a 71-65 victory over New York City Tech this evening. The Mariners improve to 6-7 while the Yellow Jackets fall to 2-13.

The Mariners opened the game on a 7-0 run and had as big as a ten point lead in the first half. Junior Janay Weathers (Fredericksburg, VA) scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds to pace USMMA, who would take a 25-20 lead into the break. The Yellow Jackets sophomore Christine Jackson (Brooklyn, NY) had 15 points and four rebound in the second half to keep NY City Tech in the game but it wasn’t enough as the Mariners would hold on for a 71-65 victory.

Weathers led USMMA with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Rebecca Grimes (Fairfax, VA) had 18 points, four rebounds and three assists while senior Kiersten Healy (Plainville, CT) added ten points, eight rebounds, two assists and two steals on the night. Jackson led NY City Tech with 23 points, seven rebounds and five steals while freshman Ayana Cinque (Brooklyn, NY) added 11 points, five rebounds and four steals.

The Mariners return to action on Friday, January 22nd when they host Juniata College. Game time is slated for 5:30pm.
