Gophers Win High-Scoring Opener

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge County) and Kate Knitter (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) combined to score 12 goals in leading Goucher to a season-opening 18-16 victory over Guilford this afternoon.

The Gophers scored twice in the final :33 of the first half to pull into an 8-8 tie and then outscored the Quakers, 6-1, over the first 13:23 of the second half.

Blatter tallied five of her seven goals in the opening period and picked up her only assist of the game on one of the three goals Knitter notched in the final 30:00. The goal Blatter scored with 17:35 left to play was the 100th of the senior attacker's career at Goucher and provided the Gophers (1-0) with a 13-9 advantage.

Knitter's fifth goal of the game closed out the scoring for Goucher with 6:02 remaining. The Quakers (0-2) went on to score the final four goals of the contest, pulling to within 18-16 on a goal by Carrie Ernst as time expired.

Sandy Okun (Stevenson, MD/McDonogh School) and Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, MA/Lawrence Academy) supplied the Gophers with three and two goals, respectively.

The Gophers finished with a 39-35 advantage in shots.
