Goucher Advances To Women's Lacrosse Championship
TOWSON, Md. - Goucher kept its hopes of capturing the inaugural
Landmark Conference championship alive today by knocking off Drew,
13-10, in the semifinals of the conference's postseason
tournament.
The victory puts the second-seeded Gophers (6-9) in the
tournament's championship game where they will face either
top-seeded Catholic or Susquehanna. The Cardinals host the
Crusaders in the other semifinal tomorrow.
The Gophers, who last won a conference championship back in 1996
when they were members of the Capital Athletic Conference, were
locked in a 2-2 tie with the Rangers (9-7) until they exploded for
five unanswered goals in the final 9:55 of the first half to assume
a 7-2 advantage at the break. The 5-0 run included three unassisted
goals by senior attacker Emily Blatter (Lexington, VA/Rockbridge
County), the third of which made her only the third player in the
history of Goucher's women's lacrosse program to reach 300 points
during her career.
Goucher took its biggest lead of the contest midway through the
second half on a goal by Blatter that made the score 12-4. She
finished with four goals and a pair of assists, extending her
goal-scoring streak to 42 games.
Marlo Tersigni (Worcester, MA/Lawrence Academy) contributed three
goals and an assist to the victory, plus she was credited with four
ground balls, 10 draw controls and two caused turnovers. Colleen
Cole (Holliston, MA/Northfield Mt. Hebron School) and Kate Knitter
(Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) supplied the Gophers with two goals
apiece.
Brittany Foster (Portland, ME/Portland) went the distance in goal
for Goucher, making 18 saves.
