Juniata Women's Soccer Secures Postseason Spot
HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Juniata College women's soccer will boldly
go where no Eagle women's soccer player has gone before - into the
post-season - following Juniata's 7-0 victory over Goucher College,
Saturday afternoon in Huntingdon, Pa.
The Eagle victory, coupled with Moravian College's 2-0 win over
Drew University earlier in the afternoon, allowed Juniata to secure
the final vacant slot and the no. 4 seed in the upcoming Landmark
Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. Juniata (9-4-3, 2-2-2
Landmark) will face no. 1 seed University of Scranton in a
semifinal matchup on Wednesday, Oct. 31, at 7:00 p.m. in Scranton,
Pa.
Despite fielding only 10 players for the match, Goucher kept
Juniata off the scoreboard until the 34th minute, when Elizabeth
Van Blarcom (Columbia Cross Roads, Md./Troy) broke the deadlock
with an unassisted goal.
That was the first three goals Juniata would score late in the
first half; Amanda Broadwell (Newfoundland, N.J./Morris Knolls)
scored off an assist from Lauren Brant (Gilbertsville,
Pa./Boyertown) in the 36th minute, and Erin Eddinger (Barto,
Pa./Boyertown) expanded the lead to 3-0 before the intermission
with Brant and Van Blarcom getting credited with assists.
In the second half, freshman Caitlin Bigelow (La Mesa,
Calif./Academy of Our Lady of Peace) added a goal and assisted on
two others, while Broadwell tallied her second of the day in the
48th minute. Katie Young (Huntingdon, Pa./Huntingdon Area) and
Maura Collins (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) added
solo markers for the Eagles.
Juniata keeper Lisa Russo (Haskell, N.J./Lakeland) played the first
85 minutes in goal, while backup Lauren Auster-Gussman (Lancaster,
Pa./Lancaster Country Day finished out the contest; nearly was
challenged during the day and forced to make a save. Goucher keeper
Kellen Matthews recorded eight saves on the afternoon.
Juniata outshot the Gophers 24-0, and had seven corner kick
opportunities to Goucher's zero.
