Stephens' Two Tallies Help Royals Past Greyhounds

SCRANTON, Pa. - Sophomore forward Beth Stephens (Pottstown, Pa./Owen J. Roberts) scored two goals in the final 14 minutes of play to lift The University of Scranton past Moravian College, 2-0, Tuesday evening at Fitzpatrick Field.

With the win, the Royals, now 6-8-1 overall, took over first-place in the Landmark Conference with a 4-1 mark and locked up a berth in the league's upcoming post-season tournament.   The loss dropped the Greyhounds to 12-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the Landmark Conference.

Stephens' goals were her team-leading sixth and seventh of the season.  In an evenly-played match, Scranton finally got on the scoreboard when Stephens knocked in a shot off of a feed from freshman midfielder Chelsea Paskman (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks South) in the 77th minute.

With less than six minutes remaining, Moravian had a golden opportunity to tie the score.  Junior midfielder Tracy Fitzpatrick (Wantage, N.J./High Point Regional) send a picture-perfect cross from the left sideline to sophomore forward Amanda Friedman (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) in front of the Royal goal.  Friedman blasted a shot from 10 yards out that was knocked away by Scranton senior goalie Jackie Colley (North Caldwell, N.J./West Essex), who finished with six saves for her second shutout of the season and the 18th of her career.

On the ensuing possession, Scranton moved the ball deep into Moravian territory, where the Greyhounds were called for an infraction.  On a direct kick, Stephens drilled a shot from 22 yards out that snuck into the left corner of the goal.  Junior goalie Caitlin Corrigan (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) finished with four saves for Moravian.

The Royals will play their final three regular-season matches on the road, beginning this Saturday, October 20, against Goucher College in Landmark Conference action in Baltimore, Maryland.  The game is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
