Double OT Win Keeps Susquehanna Unbeaten

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - Junior midfielder Kirsten Sands (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) banged in a goal less than two minutes into the second overtime period to give Susquehanna a 1-0 win over Lycoming in the first ever River Derby.

The game remained scoreless through 90 minutes of regulation and a first 10-minute overtime period, and it looked like the River Derby cup might remain in the hands of the Warriors, who had it made, by default. In the regular season, a game ends in a tie after two scoreless overtime periods and does not go to penalty kicks.

But Sands took a pass from senior co-captain Lindsay Knowlton (Souderton, Pa./North Penn) (left) with 8:22 left in the second overtime period and put it in the top left corner of the net to give Susquehanna the cup.

Junior goalkeeper Meredith Tompeck (Randolph, N.J./Randolph) recorded her second straight shutout with five saves. She has played all 281-plus minutes of the season so far for the Crusaders and to date has a goals-against average of 0.64

Susquehanna moves to 3-0 on the young season while Lycoming falls to 2-1.
