Drew Outlasts Moravian In Women's Tennis Thriller
MADISON, N.J. – In dramatic fashion the Rangers came from behind and won the final two singles matches to pull out a 5-4 victory over Moravian (2-5, 0-1 Landmark) this afternoon. The near four-hour match improved the Rangers to 2-0 in the Landmark Conference and 3-2 overall.
The Rangers trailed 3-1 after doubles play and needed to win four of six matches in singles to clinch a victory. Sofia Madrigal (San Jose, Costa Rica/Pan-American School) and Sarit Ashkenazi (Haifa, Israel/Immaculate Conception) secured straight-set victories to make the score 4-3.
With only two matches left, Cristine Conde (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) outlasted Moravian's Olivia Sonnabend in number six singles. The tying match went to three sets and a tiebreaker in the final set before Conde registered her first singles victory of the season.
The match, all square at four, now was in the hands of freshman Deanna Williams (Fairfield, Calif./Gorin Tennis Academy) at number five singles. Both games went to tiebreakers but Williams prevailed in both for the 7-6, 7-6 match clincher.
The Rangers will continue their Landmark Conference schedule this Saturday when they travel to Towson, Md. to take on Goucher College at 1:00 p.m.
