TOWSON, Md. - Each week the Landmark Conference celebrates its talented student-athlete with a "Friday Focus." This week's edition features Moravian College's Justin Beasley - Turner
Why did you choose Moravian College?
I felt the most comfortable here. No other campus felt like home, until I came to Moravian. Coach Baumann is a huge factor too. His personality stood out to me, and he really goes the extra mile for everyone he can.
What made you start running in cross country and track & field?
I played a lot of different sports when I was younger, but once I stopped playing baseball, I really wanted to pick up another sport in the Spring. So my 8th grade spring season of Middle school, I decided to run track. I actually wanted to join and become a sprinter, but I was too nervous and went with the distance group. I took to distance running very well, and after that season I was convinced to run Cross Country by the High school runners. I didn't even know Cross Country existed until that moment, but here I am, ever grateful for that series of events.
Are you involved with other groups on campus?
I work with the Sports Management and Information department. It's great because I get to enjoy and support all of the other sports and athletes here at Moravian College.
Do you have any hobbies?
I listen to a lot of music. I explore a lot of genres to help keep an open mind. I also enjoy board games like Stratego and card games like Uno or Spades. I've been trying to read more often too. I'll get around to it.
Which way does your toilet paper hang on the wall - over or under?
If you use toilet paper any other way than over, then you just aren't doing it right.
What dance move are you secretly awesome at?
Let's not go there.
What is your favorite song to jam out to in the car?
It's a tie between Feel Good Inc. by The Gorillaz, and All of the Lights by Kanye West. Whenever I'm driving with my twin brother Joshua, those two songs always get a few playthroughs.
What show on Netflix did you binge watch embarrassingly fast?
ESPN 30 for 30 sports documentaries can be so captivating. Captivating enough to take hours out of your day, and by day, I mean keep you up at night until 3 AM.
If you could invite any five people to dinner, who would it be?
Oh this would be fun. I'm interpreting this as ANYONE, so I would go with W.E.B. Du Bois, Morgan Freeman, Ray Lewis, Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Lee. I think after that dinner, I'd be motivated enough to conquer the world.
What is the most embarrassing thing that has happened to you during practice or a game?
My freshman year, our team went out to the Oberlin College Inter-regional Rumble out in Ohio. The race started off and had a super sharp turn about 100 meters into the course. If you had paid enough attention during the course run through, you would have been ready for this turn. Well, I did not pay enough attention, so when the starting gun went off, and it came time for the turn, it took me by surprise and I was caught up in the fence boundary and took a tumble. I had to lay on the ground a bit to avoid tripping up the entire hoard of runners. Later on, in the same race, I misjudged the length of how much race was left, and decided to chuck my shoe that became untied, only to realize I still had about another mile of rocky terrain running to go. That race was not my finest hour.
