Cross Country Awards Announced
Cross Country Awards Announced
TOWSON, Md. – At the
conclusion of the 2012 Landmark Cross Country Championships,
Moravian’s Dillon Farrell and Drew’s Jennifer Van
Wingerden were named the Men’s and Women’s Performers
of the Year. The awards along with Rookies of the Year and Coaching
Staffs of the Year were selected by the conference coaches.
Farrell dominated the cross country scene in just his sophomore
season. Last year Farrell finished 16th at the Landmark
Championships and missed out on All-Conference honors by two
places. A year later and Farrell has posted five top-20 finishes in
five races including a win at the Juniata Invitational and the
recent championships. He ran away with the title on Saturday,
winning the race 43 seconds ahead of his competition. Earlier this
month, Farrell broke the conference record for the 8 kilometer race
finishing the Gettysburg Invitational in 24:44.
Senior Jennifer Van Wingerden competed in her first Landmark
Championship race on Saturday and won it by 16 seconds. In just her
second season of cross country, Van Wingerden missed last
year’s race due to injury but entered Saturday’s meet
as one of the favorites. Earlier this season Van Wingerden led the
Landmark competition and ran almost the same time on the course
this past weekend on the way to earning medalist honors.
First Team All-Conference honors are awarded to the top seven
finishers in each race with those finishing eighth through 14th are
awarded Second Team honors. Joining Farrell on the men’s
First Team are Moravian teammates Donnie Noble, Alec Duncan and
Dylan Marton along with runner-up in the race Juniata’s Nate
Alter. Catholic’s Matthias Aruaco-Shapiro and
Susquehanna’s Colin Eberhardt rounded out the first team.
A junior this year, Alter is a three-time All-Conference selection
after earning Second Team honors during his first two seasons.
Noble and Marton will wrap up their careers at the end of this
season. Noble is a four-time All-Conference selection and moved up
one spot this year finishing third after a fourth place finish in
2011. Marton earns First Team honors for the first team in his
career and follows up a Second Team selection last season.
Arauco-Shapiro and Eberhardt were the two rookies recognized with
First Team honors. Arauco-Shapiro edged Eberhardt by one
one-hundredth of a second and was voted Rookie of the Year for his
performances this season.
Moravian Head Coach Jesse Baumann was voted Men’s Coach of
the Year for the second consecutive year in just his second season
at the helm. The Greyhounds finished with four runners in the top
five and cruised to the 2012 title.
The women’s First Team featured student-athletes from five
different institutions. Along with Van Wingerden, Juniata’s
Katrina Woods and Caroline Morgan finished second and third
respectively. Woods earns her third All-Conference honor and second
First Team recognition after finishing sixth last season. Morgan
will wrap up her career as a three-time All-Conference selection
and two-time First Team honoree after finishing seventh in 2010.
She moved up 11 spots from a 14th place finish last season.
The 2011 Rookie of the Year, Katherine Currier of Goucher College
moved up one spot from last season to finish fourth in the race and
earn back-to-back First Team honors. Catholic’s Rebecca
Radcliffe made the biggest climb amongst All-Conference performers,
jumping up 24 spots from a 39th place finish last year. On
Saturday, Radcliffe finished fifth and led the Cardinals to their
first conference championship. Teammate Keely Eckberg moved up 10
spots to finish seventh this season. Susquehanna freshman Ashley
West finished sixth in her first championship race and earned
Rookie of the Year honors as the top newcomer, and only newcomer on
both All-Conference teams.
Joe Fisher is in his 35th year
directing the Catholic women’s cross country and track and
field teams. The veteran head coach previously earned Capital
Athletic Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year honors four
different times, but this season marks the first Landmark Cross
Country honor for him. The Cardinals successfully climbed the
standings from sixth place in2010 to third place in 2011 before
winning the race this year.
