Bill McGuiness Named Landmark Senior Scholar Athlete
TOWSON, Md. - The Landmark Conference has chosen six athletes as Landmark Senior Scholar Athletes for their respective fall sports. A committee of Landmark Conference officers, athletics directors and sports information directors selected the recipients, choosing one senior from each of the fall sports sponsored by the conference.
The honorees must have a cumulative GPA of 3.2 and are selected based on their accomplishments in athletics and academics. The conference office will announce the six honorees over a two week period.
The University of Scranton's Bill McGuiness has been named the Men's Soccer Senior Scholar Athlete. McGuiness transferred to Scranton after spending a semester at Villanova and has since been a three-time All-Landmark selection. He earned Second Team recognition as a sophomore before being named to the First Team in 2011 and 2012. This season he was also voted the Landmark Offensive Player of the Year. Most recently, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) named McGuiness a Second Team All-American and First Team All-Region honoree.
A three-year starter in the midfield, McGuiness led the Royals this season with 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points. He had six game-winning goals and led the team with 113 shots, including 45 on goal. His play was integral in the Royals' reaching the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and finishing with a 17-3-2 record. They lost to eventual national champion Messiah, 3-0, in a national quarterfinal on Nov. 18.
McGuiness has excelled academically as well, boasting a 3.93 cumulative grade point average while majoring in finance with a minor in economics. He was named to the Capital One Academic All-America First Team at the conclusion of the 2012 season. He is a three-time Landmark Honor Roll selection and two-time Landmark All-Academic team member.
McGuiness is a member of three honor societies at Scranton including the Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit, Beta Gamma Sigma International and Omicron Delta Epsilon International Economics. He received the Presidential Scholar Award while also earning Dean's List recognition every semester.
Additionally, McGuiness is a member of the Scranton Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the Business Leadership Class of 2013, President Alumni Liaisons (PALS) and has volunteered with youth soccer, Steamtown National Historic Site and Special Olympics.
