Landmark Cross Country Awards Announced
Landmark Cross Country Awards Announced
TOWSON, Md. – At the end of every Landmark Cross Country Championships, the coaches vote on their selections for Performers, Rookies and Coaching Staffs of the Year. The votes were unanimous across the board in all categories.
Juniata's Katrina Woods was named the Women's Performer of the Year. The senior came back and won the Landmark Championship race after finishing as runner-up a year ago. She is a four-time All-Landmark honoree including three appearances on the First Team. The Landmark 6K record holder is also the first Juniata runner to be named Performer of the Year.
Goucher's June Chiango was voted the Women's Rookie of the Year, finishing 16 seconds ahead of the next freshman on Saturday. She ran the 6K race in 24:42.40, three seconds faster than her time on the same course earlier in the year.
Moravian's Jesse Baumann and his staff were voted the Women's Coaching Staff of the Year for the second time in his career. Baumann also received the award for the men in 2011 and 2012. The Greyhound women took home their second conference title after finishing second last year. All five scoring runners finished in the top 15.
On the men's side, Moravian's Dillon Farrell took home the Performer of the Year award for the second consecutive year. He won the championship race by nearly 19 seconds after finishing every race this season ahead of Landmark competition. He was named Landmark Runner of the Week five times this fall and broke the conference 8K record with a time of 24:35 at the Princeton University Invitational last month.
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy's Daniel Wolfer was named the Men's Rookie of the Year after finishing the Championship race as the fastest freshman. He ran the 8K in 28:01.00 to place 11th out of the 77 competitors. His performance was particularly notable as it was just his third race all year and first since Sept. 14 due to the government shutdown.
Susquehanna Head Coach Marty Owens was picked as the Men's Coach of the Year. The Crusaders quite literally ran away with the championship as their first four runners finished in the top five. They had six in the top 10 and won the title with 22 points, a conference record. The honor marks his fifth Men's Cross Country Coaching Staff of the Year award and seventh combined for men and women.
First Team All-Conference honors are awarded to the top seven finishers in each race with those finishing eighth through 14th awarded Second Team honors. The women's First Team featured student-athletes from five different institutions. Along with Woods, Moravian's Claire Del Casale and Emily Lambright earned First Team honors. Goucher's Katherine Currier, Susquehanna's Ashley West and Scranton's Cara Notariani and Mary O'Neill rounded out the First Team.
Del Casale earned First Team honors for the second time while earning her third All-Landmark recognition. The junior finished second on Saturday, more than a minute faster than her time in the 2012 championship race. Lambright becomes a two-time All-Landmark selection after being named to the Second Team as a freshman in 2011. Currier is a three-time First Team All-Landmark honoree, climbing one spot every year to finish third on Saturday. The 2012 Rookie of the Year, West moved up two spots from last season to finish fourth and earn back-to-back First Team honors.
A senior this year, Notarianni ran the Landmark Championship course healthy for the first time in her career. She placed fifth this year after coming in 20th a year ago. O'Neill capped off her career with First Team All-Landmark honors for the first time after earning Second Team recognition the last two years.
Joining Farrell on the men's First Team is Moravian teammate Alec Duncan along with Juniata's Nate Alter and four Susquehanna runners Alex Price, Colin Eberhardt, Paul Crowe and John Crowe.
The Susquehanna quartet finished two through five in Saturday's race with three of the four earning First Team recognition for the first time. Price finished 10th last year before moving up eight spots to claim runner-up honors this season. Coincidentally he improved eight spots last year as well. Just a sophomore, Eberhardt earned back-to-back First Team honors, and jumped four spots in the results. The Crowe brothers were separated by less than two seconds to finish fourth and fifth. Paul has been on the Second Team the last two years and finished fourth this year. John finished 15th a year ago, narrowly missing out on All-Landmark recognition as a rookie, but made up for it this year with a fifth place finish.
Alter wrapped up his Landmark cross country career as a four-time All-Landmark selection after earning Second Team honors his first two seasons and finishing with back-to-back First Team awards. A junior, Duncan has earned First Team honors every year thus far and went on to finish seventh this season.
