Field Hockey Awards Announced
TOWSON, Md. – Drew's Brooke Gagliano has been named the Landmark Field Hockey Player of the Year, a year after earning Offensive Player of the Year honors. Juniata's Emma Dahmus was voted Offensive Player of the Year.
Gagliano scored 16 goals with 11 assists during the regular season to rank second in the Landmark in goals, assists, and points. A playmaker for the nationally ranked Rangers, Gagliano is known for her incredible work ethic. She became quite the threat in front of goal. She scored a combined 13 goals in her first two seasons before having a breakout junior season with 19 goals and seven assists for 45 points. Gagliano matched the feat this year finishing with 45 points through the conference semifinal.
Dahmus is a talented midfielder for the Eagles, tallying seven goals and two assists this season. She plays the full field and makes a difference on both ends. The senior is a three-time All-Landmark selection after earning First Team recognition for the second time this year.
Three of Gagliano's teammates joined her on first team including the Landmark's leading scorer, Sam Barcia. Barcia ranks fifth in the country for goals per game at 1.76. She has racked up 27 goals this season, a new Landmark record. Midfielder Danielle Waleko tallied six goals with a league-high 16 assists during the regular season to earn First Team honors for the first time. She currently ranks fourth in the country for assists per game and also set a new conference record. Jess Johnson has been an integral part of the Drew defense. A two-time First Team All-Landmark selection, Johnson returned from an ACL injury in 2012 to anchor the Drew defense while developing the transition game from the backline.
Catholic's Kim Hermann and Maura Campbell have been named First Team selections for the third time in three years. Hermann is the Cardinals' leading scorer with 14 goals and four assists through the regular season. She finished second in the Landmark in conference goals with six. The 2013 Landmark Championship Most Valuable Player, Campbell has been credited as Catholic's on-field leader. She is a solid force at center midfield and tallied two goals with six assists in the regular season including the game-winning assist against nationally ranked Salisbury.
Leading the Landmark's top defense are Catholic's Tarah Portland and Megan Comunale. Portland is a sophomore defender with great speed and counterattacking abilities. Comunale finished the regular season with a league-low 0.75 goals against average and currently ranks fourth in NCAA Division III.
Joining Comunale as a First Team goalkeeper is Susquehanna senior Margaret Ruth. Ruth had an outstanding year in goal for the Crusaders finishing with a .830 save percentage to rank second in the Landmark all-time. She notched 132 saves including a season-high 21 against Elizabethtown.
Moravian's Catherine Duffin earned First Team All-Landmark honors this season after leading the Greyhounds with 20 points on eight goals and four assists. Scranton defender Jessica Pankey earned First Team honors for the second year in a row. Pankey had another outstanding season as the Royals' center defender. She finished with two defensive saves including one against Moravian.
Goucher's Lizzie Barminski was selected the Landmark Rookie of the Year She tallied five goals and eight assists in her rookie campaign as an attacking center midfielder. Barminski ranks fourth in the Landmark in assists including two against Moravian.
In her seventh season at the helm, Drew head coach Felicia Cappabianca and her staff have been voted the Landmark Coaching Staff of the Year. Her first conference honor, Cappabianca led the Rangers to a 16-2 regular season record. The team went undefeated in the Landmark and currently boasts a No. 18 national record by the NFHCA.
